action

Barbara Dray meets Nicolas Malle in a video store . After a long flirtation with the help of the film title, the two meet and become a couple. They spend months in love together until one day Nicolas expresses the desire to have a child with Barbara. She agrees and can tell him a short time later that she is pregnant. Instead of the best time, however, the problems begin with that. The date of birth in March is exactly the time that Babs has to complete her doctoral thesis in philosophy . Although neither of them want to tell their families about the pregnancy at first, Nino's mother Édith finds out directly from her son, while Babs' mother Claire finds out indirectly. Babs' plan of not knowing the gender of the child until birth does not work either, as the gynecologist reveals that it will be a girl. Babs can hardly continue her doctoral thesis because everyday life is filled with searching for names, among other things. In order to have time for herself, Babs skips the antenatal classes and instead goes to the cinema or a bar.

The birth turns into a nightmare for Babs, as the delivering doctor is Nino's uncle. Since she did not take the antenatal classes, Babs is overwhelmed with the situation and can only improve her situation moderately. Nino passes out during the cut in her ridge. The rest of the time in the hospital is also sometimes irritating for Babs, so it serves as an object for the ward doctors to see a proper perineal incision scar. Before leaving the hospital, Babs collapses as she is afraid that she will not be able to cope with everyday life. It initially consists of clearing out boxes, as Babs and Nino have moved into a new apartment for their daughter Léa. Nino has given up his work in the video store and looked for an office job. He is now often at work, while Babs is getting more and more the feeling of being left alone with the household and the child. There are also negative consequences of pregnancy, such as incontinence and lack of sexual intercourse. Because her mother advises against it, Babs visits a nursing club, now demonizes the milk bottle and prefers a swaddle to the stroller. While the bond with daughter Leah grows closer, Babs becomes estranged from Nino. To save their relationship, Babs and Nino go on a baby club vacation with Léa. This only helps the relationship for a short time - at Christmas the two separate for a while. Babs has the feeling that she has only been locked in since Léa's birth.

She moves in with her mother, while Léa stays with him at Nino's instigation. Since she is stuck with her doctoral thesis and her professor regards the submitted pages as useless patchwork, she deletes her work. Instead, she writes the novel A joyful event , in which she deals with the time of pregnancy and motherhood. After a few weeks, she meets again with Nino and Léa for the first time. Both speak out and Babs realizes that even if a relationship should end, life always goes on. Above all, Barbara Nicolas shows a positive pregnancy test that she has just taken in the restaurant's toilet: in other words, she is pregnant for the second time!

criticism

“The myth of happy parenthood has rarely been torn apart so honestly,” said Der Spiegel , and found that the film asks “important questions about modern role relationships and the compatibility of work and family”. Cinema described the film as a “disillusioning anti-romance about a young couple”.

“It is the accurate punch lines and authentic details of the female perspective that make this sensitive and, despite minor clichés, honest comedy a joyous event,” wrote Die Zeit . For the lexicon of international films , A Joyful Event was initially a "quick and imaginative" boy meets girl "story, which in the second part turns into a" gaudy tragic comedy with a realistic touch ".
