life and work

Einar Löfstedt was born the son of a Graecist of the same name . He studied Latin and ancient Greek philology at Uppsala University . His main teachers were Olof August Danielsson and Per Persson . Study trips took him to the universities of Bonn (1904) and Göttingen (1909), two of the centers of German and thus worldwide classical philology at the time. Here he came into contact with Franz Bücheler , Friedrich Leo and Eduard Norden . His connection to the leading German classical philology of the time was also expressed in the fact that he published almost all of his works in German. In 1907 he was in Uppsala with the work contributions to the knowledge of the later Latinity doctorate and also a lecturer at the university. After his work Peregrinatio Aetheriae caused a sensation and recognition, Löfstedt was offered the position of general editor of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in 1912 to succeed Ernst Lommatzsch , which he turned down. Georg Dittmann was finally appointed to the position. In the following year Löfstedt found his lifelong academic home with the acceptance of a professorship for Roman eloquence and poetry ( eloquentia et poesia Romana ) at the University of Lund . He turned down an offer at the University of Breslau . From 1919 to 1939 he was inspector of the Blekingska nations at the university. In the war years from 1939 to 1945, which were also critical for Sweden , he served as rector of his university. In 1942 he was elected to the Svenska Academies and held seat number nine there, succeeding Otto von Friesen and before Ture Johannisson . As a member of this academy, as one of the academy's 18 members, he helped determine the annual Nobel Prize winners for literature until his death . In 1945 he was retired. From 1936 to 1949 Löfstedt was a member of the Thesaurus Commission . He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , since 1920 of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences , since 1931 a corresponding member of the British Academy , since 1932 of the Bavarian and since 1936 of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

Löfstedt devoted himself entirely to Latin studies with the exception of a few excursions into Greek studies. The main focus of work was the historical syntax , style and semasiology of Latin. The Peregrinatio Aetheriae was designed as an introductory text commentary on the lexicons and syntax of late ancient Latin; it is still considered a standard work today. Löfstedt's main work is the extremely material- rich Syntactica , a work in two volumes. The first volume was devoted to the nominal syntax of Latin, the second volume combines individual studies, among other things, on stylistics and syntax, especially verbal syntax. The Syntactica is considered to be one of the standard works of classical philology. Löfstedt's work is considered to be the constitution of the so-called “Swedish School” in philology, which has produced representatives such as Dag Norberg , Aarne Henrik Salonius and Josef Svnung .

In 1916 Löfstedt married the literary critic Annie Günther . Both daughter Ingrid Arvidsson was born in 1919 and became a well-known writer. Löfstedt's grave can be found in the Uppsala Old Church Cemetery .
