action

Toni Bender is a young woman who can grab a hand and who is her whole "husband". She successfully runs a fruit stand in the Munich wholesale market hall . One day she receives the longed-for news that her husband is coming home from captivity. She picks him up at the train station in her own little van. Heinz Bender is amazed at how capable and independent his wife has become. When she also makes sure that he finds his way back to the profession he has learned and is soon again a sought-after architect, Heinz realizes that his wife has grown over his head.

How different is Marie-Claire! The girl is a little naive and reckless, but very in need of support. Besides, she always has time for him. One day Heinz explains to his wife that he is going on a business trip. In reality, however, he is going on a skiing holiday with his lover. It doesn't take long, however, before Toni finds out about him. She leaves her husband and moves into a pension.

In Italy, Toni Bender has a business appointment with her supplier Aldo Matthey. She then experiences New Year's Eve with him on the market square of a lively small town. In doing so, the two get closer, but Toni doesn't dare to take the last step of surrendering himself completely to the man.

Marie-Claire urges Heinz more and more impatiently to file for divorce. With him, however, there is growing awareness that his relationship with the young woman was just an adventure. In reality, he longs for a partner with whom he can seriously discuss his problems and have in-depth conversations: Toni. A few more retarding moments follow ; but in the end the Bender couple make up again.

criticism

The lexicon of international film draws the following conclusion: “Clichéd, superficial processing of realistic, contemporary conflicts.” The critic of the TV magazine Prisma has a much better opinion of the film : “With great sensitivity for his actors, Paul Verhoeven staged a psychologically exciting post-war drama about the new self-confidence of women and the mental exhaustion of men. The quick-witted Luise Ullrich and Curd Jürgens, who is about to embark on an international career, as a broken hero, made an excellent cast. "
