A Princess for Christmas (Original title: A Princess for Christmas ) is an American film by the director Michael Damian from 2011 . The leading roles are cast with Katie McGrath and Sam Heughan and Roger Moore as Duke of Castlebury.

action

Seven-year-old Maddie and 14-year-old Milo have lived with their aunt Jules Daly in Buffalo since their parents' tragic accident . Christmas is approaching, but none of the three feel contemplative because they are all in trouble. Jules lost her job in the antique shop, Milo was caught calling a video game, and the children's nanny quit because she couldn't cope with the family chaos.

Unexpectedly, Paisley Winterbottom arrives too, suddenly standing in front of the door. He is the butler of noble Edward, Duke of Castlebury, who would like to see his grandchildren one more time before he dies. This development comes as a surprise because Edward has so far avoided any contact with his grandchildren, as his eldest son had married a commoner, Jules’s sister, and had children with her. After some back and forth, Jules decides to go to their grandfather's with her nephew and niece. He lives with his son Prince Ashton in a castle in England, surrounded by plenty of domestic staff. However, Edward seems to have changed his mind and is boycotting Christmas decorations and the Christmas tree. The Duke feels too reminded of his dead son. Ultimately, the children and Jules take the initiative and present the stubborn duke with a fait accompli by presenting him with an almost completely decorated Christmas tree that brings back memories that have been buried in him.

The Duke even decides to give a ball on Christmas Eve. Prince Ashton also takes a liking to taking care of his nephew Milo by introducing him to the art of archery and turns the lock upside down for Maddie to find the lost head of her doll.

In preparation for the ball, Ashton teaches Jules to dance with a crackle between the two. Of course, that doesn't suit Ashton's friend, Lady Arabella Marchand du Belmont, at all. Jules, too, feels offended when she overhears a conversation between Edward and Ashton the day before the ball, from which she believes that the two would not want her at the ball. For this reason, she secretly leaves the property to leave, but is stopped and persuaded by the staff at the train station to attend the ball. To the sound of Iosif Ivanovici's waltz “Donauwellen” , Jules and Ashton have “their” dance, at the end of which they kiss. This leads to Lady Arabella overreacting in her jealousy and telling the ball guests that Jules is unemployed and Milo is a thief. Not only Ashton takes Jules' side, Duke Edward also vigorously puts Arabella in her place and shows her what he thinks of her.

Ashton and Jules get married the following spring.

criticism

"A Christmas film with a prominent starring role, which tells its story with a lot of feeling and not without reason reminds of Charles Dickens ' famous story ' A Christmas Carol ' (1843)."

“'Cinderella' meets 'The Little Lord' in this target group-specific Christmas fairy tale designed on the drawing board for the whole family, but especially the girls below. Katie McGrath, fantasy fans known as Morgana from the TV adventures of ' Merlin ', shows that she also has the honest girl in her repertoire convincingly. She meets the well-deserved 007 actor Roger Moore as a 'right-wing extremist grandpa', which in total guarantees well-kept diversion. "

“Anyone who believes (or wants to believe) in Santa Claus will enjoy the clash of 'ordinary' popcorn and noble high culture. And for the romantics there is a cute prince in the script who makes the commoner Jules happy. "
