Population development of Karlsruhe
This article shows the development of the population of Karlsruhe in tabular and graphical form.
Population development
In the decades after the city was founded in 1715, Karlsruhe only had a few thousand inhabitants. With the onset of industrialization , population growth accelerated. In 1800 only 7,275 people lived in the city, in 1895 there were already 84,000. In 1901 the population of the city of Karlsruhe exceeded the limit of 100,000, making it a major city .
The city's population also grew through incorporation. Between 1907 and 1910 Beiertheim, Rintheim, Rüppurr, Grünwinkel and Daxlanden were incorporated. At the census on December 1, 1910, Karlsruhe already had 134,313 inhabitants. Bulach came to Karlsruhe in 1929 and Knielingen in 1935. The incorporation of Durlach and Hagsfeld on April 1, 1938 brought an increase from 21,775 people to 186,350 inhabitants.
The effects of the Second World War are clearly visible . Karlsruhe was the target of numerous Allied air raids. The most severe occurred between September 5 and December 4, 1944. The war totaled 1,745 dead, 3,508 injured and 13,720 destroyed or damaged residential buildings. Overall, Karlsruhe - like all other large cities - temporarily lost a significant number of inhabitants through evacuation, flight, deportations and air raids, especially shortly before the end of the war. At the end of the war (April 4, 1945 in Karlsruhe) this was around 68 percent (130,000 people). The population fell from 190,000 in May 1939 to 60,000 on April 30, 1945, but rose again to 101,000 within a few weeks, so that one cannot speak of a real decline in the population. At the end of 1945 there were again over 143,000.
With the return of the evacuees and the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the German eastern areas, the population rose very quickly. In 1948 the prewar level was reached again. In 1963, more than 250,000 people lived in Karlsruhe. Between 1972 and 1975 the incorporation of the surrounding areas (Stupferich, Hohenwettersbach, Wolfartsweier, Grötzingen, Wettersbach and Neureut) brought an increase from 22,000 people to 280,000 inhabitants.
The population development has been shaped by the birth deficits of the German residents for a long time . Although Karlsruhe recorded sustained migration losses to the surrounding cities and municipalities, migration gains have also been made by foreign and German citizens in recent years. On December 31, 2011, the “ official population ” for Karlsruhe was 300,711 according to an update by the Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices) - a historic high.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1830 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1837 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1837 the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.
