The Eisbach as the left branch of the Isar is the strongest brook in the English Garden in Munich .

course

The Eisbach belongs to the network of Munich city brooks , all of which are fed by the Isar and for the most part flow underground through Munich's old town and the Lehel . In the English Garden it is part of a brook system that also includes the Schwabinger Bach and the Oberstjägermeisterbach , both of which are longer than the Eisbach.

This is created by the merging of the Stadtmühlbach and Stadtsägmühlbach at the Eisbachbrücke and emerges on the southern edge of the English Garden in the immediate vicinity of the Haus der Kunst . It flows a good two kilometers to the east of the park, parallel to the Isar and flows into the river about 500 meters below the John F. Kennedy Bridge ( Lage ).

Shortly before the confluence, part of the brook branches off to the left, continues underground and only 700 meters further, below the Oberföhring weir , it is returned to the Isar.

history

The main features of the stream system in the English Garden were designed around 1789 by the master horticulturist von Sckell , who used the floodplains of the Isar as natural features.

Eisbach waves

A stone step at the exit point on Prinzregentenstrasse of the very water-rich and fast-flowing Eisbach has created - all year round since an annex was attached to one of the two banks - a rapids and a standing wave about half a meter high , which is used by canoeists and river surfers and also internationally by surfers got known. It is both popular and feared by surfers because directly behind it, several rows of stone blocks underwater can cause injuries, especially in inexperienced surfers.

In April 2010 it became known that the city of Munich had taken over the site from the Free State of Bavaria in exchange for a plot of land in the English Garden on Koeniginstrasse in order to put surfing on a legal basis after 35 years. At the same time, the documentary film Keep Surfing started in the cinemas , portraying the situation on the Eisbach and the surfers, some of whom come from all over the world. Well-known surfers like Jack Johnson have also surfed here.

About one kilometer behind this better known Eisbach wave there is the "small Eisbach wave" in the same channel. It is a little easier to drive, but for inexperienced surfers there are still considerable dangers due to the concrete borders on both sides and the sometimes strong undercurrent. For this reason and because of the risk of collision with the Eisbach swimmers, beginners are advised to avoid this wave and to avoid the raft land in Thalkirchen .

Recreational swimming

On warm summer days, the Eisbach is also frequently frequented by bathers, although swimming is actually prohibited in the entire English Garden (with the exception of the surfing wave). There are always fatalities: from 2007 to 2017 alone, eight people drowned in the Eisbach. One of the reasons for this is the very strong current. In addition to stones, dangers such as broken beer bottles and "discarded" bicycles can also hide under the surface of the water. Since the stream is relatively shallow, accidents can happen while jumping into the water. In addition, the water does not get warmer than 15 ° C even in summer, which harbors the risk of cold shock . Since there are no fixed exit points and the current makes it difficult to get out, bathers occasionally drift too far and finally get stuck behind the Tivoli Bridge in the barriers in front of the weir of the Tivoli power station , where they have to be rescued by the fire department.
