The Tivoli power plant is a listed hydropower plant on the Eisbach in Munich. It is located in the northern part of the English Garden near Gyßlingstrasse.

History and technical data

The power station built in 1895/96 supplied electricity from 1896 to 1931 for the Maffei locomotive factory, which was built in 1838 by Joseph Anton von Maffei in Hirschau. With the merger of Maffei and Krauss & Co. to form Krauss-Maffei , production was relocated to Allach and the power plant was shut down.

In 1896 the performance was still modest: "three turbines, two undershot water wheels and a steam engine generated around 300 horsepower".

In 1901 three Francis turbines with a maximum output of 330 HP each, totaling approx. 727 kW, were installed to replace the old equipment. “Back then, the Eisbach supplied almost 22 cubic meters of water per second, and the height of fall was 4.3 meters. In addition, a steam reserve was set up in the power station, which consisted of three standing composite tandem steam engines, each of 330 horsepower, designed by Maffei. "

In the fall of 1948, the power plant was put back into operation by Tivoli-Kunstmühle AG, which used the electricity generated to operate the grain mill located about 1,000 meters to the south . Since then it has also been called the Tivoli Power Plant. The name is derived from the Tivoli district .

On March 31, 1969, the Tivoli Art Mill stopped its milling operations. The electricity generated by the power plant has since been fed into the public grid.

In 1985 it was entered in the list of historical monuments of the city of Munich “Former hydro and steam power station of Maffei iron works, built in 1896, expanded around 1900; Bright brick construction, the two-gabled turbine hall bridging the Eisbach, the boiler hall adjacent, the original machine equipment partially preserved. "

In the summer of 1986 the power plant was put back into operation after a modernization and renovation. Two of the old turbines were replaced by new, smaller but more powerful ones. The maximum power per turbine is now 450 kW (approx. 620 hp), the maximum flow rate is 12.5 cubic meters per second and turbine. The maximum drop height is 4.5 meters. One of the old turbines and the control room have been preserved. The turbine and the associated generator are still functional, but are only operated occasionally for demonstration purposes. The other two turbines are in a museum.
