The Stadtbachstufe is a small hydropower plant in Munich .

location

The power plant is located in the Isarvorstadt district of Munich on the Große Stadtbach , which is a continuation of the Isar works canal . Most of the water from the Große Stadtbach drives the Isarwerk 3 located directly next to the Stadtbachstufe and then flows back into the Isar . The rest of the water drives the city stream and then feeds the Munich city streams .

history

Exit of the Großer Stadtbach from the Stadtbachstufe

Since the Middle Ages, the Große Stadtbach , which fed the Munich city brooks , has been flowing at this point , a system of originally natural, later canalised and developed branches of the Isar. Isarwerk 3 was built on this site from 1921 to 1923 . When most of the city streams were closed, a large part of the water from the large city stream was returned to the Isar at this point. However, a small part was branched off and fed the remaining city streams.

In 2006, the Stadtwerke München built a small power plant at this point, the Stadtbachstufe, in order to convert the energy from this small branch into electricity. This construction was financed by those receiving the M-Natur electricity tariff, which is just under 2 cents per kilowatt hour above the normal tariff and the proceeds of which are used by the municipal utilities for the construction of regenerative energy generation systems.

description

Functional principle of the Stadtbachstufe

Together with the small hydropower plant on the Sempt, the Stadtbachstufe is the smallest of the twelve hydropower plants operated by Stadtwerke München . It is one of the rare plants that gets its energy with the help of a hydropower screw. The Archimedean screw used in it has a diameter of 2.70 m and a length of 7.85 m, making it the world's largest waterwheel screw with a cantilevered steel trough when it was commissioned in 2006. Since the power plant is located in a residential area, the auger had to be enclosed.

Hydropower screw of the Stadtbachstufe

The screw bridges a water fall height of 2.80 m and can absorb a maximum amount of water of 2.50 m³ / s. At a nominal speed of 28 min −1 , it has a nominal output of 50 kW. The system thus generates an average of around 430,000 kWh per year.

The exterior of the power plant building is accessible; access is from Isartalstrasse. The rotating snail can be observed through a window, and interior lighting that can be switched on from the outside was set up for this purpose. An information board on the power plant building provides information about the creation and functioning of the power plant.
