Ekkehard Eickhoff
Ekkehard Eickhoff (born June 8, 1927 in Berlin ; † May 5, 2019 in Bonn ) was a German historian and German diplomat .
Life
Ekkehard Eickhoff studied history at the Berlin Humboldt University from 1946 to 1948, after a period of study in Beirut and in 1951 in Munich and Saarbrücken after a period of study in Beirut. He received his doctorate in 1953 from Saarland University. In 1973 he completed his habilitation for medieval and modern history at the University of Stuttgart .
In 1953 he joined the Foreign Office . He was deployed in the diplomatic service in Cairo , Bern and Ankara and belonged to the Eastern European Department of the Foreign Office. After all, he was the German ambassador to South Africa , Ireland and Turkey . He wrote numerous speeches for the then Foreign Minister Walter Scheel . From 1984 to 1988 he headed German delegations to the CSCE , including at the expert meeting on human rights in Ottawa in 1984, for human contacts in Bern in 1986 and at the CSCE follow-up conference in Vienna from 1986 to 1988. In addition to the follow-up conference, the experts' meeting in Ottawa, in which the Eastern European participating states entered into an emerging human rights dialogue with the Western participants, received public attention. His activity in South Africa was determined by the German government's criticism of apartheid and efforts to dismantle it - which is quite controversial in German domestic politics .
At times he also worked as a lecturer at the University of Stuttgart. In his historical accounts, Eickhoff dealt with topics that connect the German past with the history of Italy and with the Ottoman or Byzantine Southeastern Europe.
