The El Alto district is located in the Talara province of the Piura region in the extreme northwest of Peru . The district was established on March 17, 1955. It has an area of 491.33 km². The census in 2017 counted 8,316 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7,082, in 2007 7137. The administrative seat of the district is the small town of El Alto , located 2.3 km from the coast, 275 m high with 8016 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The El Alto district is located on the Pacific coast and extends over a desert landscape. The district has a 12 km long coastline and extends up to about 27 km inland. The capital El Alto is located 120 km northwest of the regional capital Piura . In the north, the El Alto district borders on the Los Órganos district , in the east on the Marcavelica district ( Sullana province ), in the southeast on the Pariñas district and in the south on the Lobitos district .
