El Mirage is an American city in Arizona in Maricopa County . It has 31,797 inhabitants (as of 2010) on an area of 25.0 km². The city is located in the metropolitan area of the capital Phoenix . US Highway 60 runs through El Mirage .

El Mirage is about 15 miles northwest of Phoenix. The closest neighboring cities, clockwise from north to south, are Surprise , Sun City West , Sun City , Youngtown, and Litchfield Park . The White Tank Mountains rise to the west and the Luke Air Force Base is located in the southwest. Between 1957 and 1983 more than 2,000 members of the Bundeswehr were trained as pilots on the Starfighter , among other things .
history
The Hohokam were the first residents of the urban area of El Mirage. Overall, they settled the entire southern half of Arizona, starting from today's city of Flagstaff south to the Mexican border. Scientists suspect that it was around 300 BC. Advanced north from Mexico . A key feature of the Hohokam culture was an elaborate irrigation system that stretched over 1200 kilometers and irrigated an area of over 10,000 hectares. They turned out to be able farmers and became known as canal builders. They traded with their neighbors to the north and east, the Anasazi and the Mogollon . The decline of the Hohokam culture began in the twelfth century. Long periods of drought caused famine and in the following century floods destroyed the irrigation system, so that the Hohokam lost their livelihoods. There is evidence that the Pima may be descendants of the Hohokam because they used the same traditional irrigation techniques.
From 1867, most of the old canals of the Hohokam were reactivated by American farmers and used to irrigate their fields. In the 20th century, the irrigation system was rebuilt with federal support, which supplied the entire current city of Phoenix with sufficient water. During the early 1930s, farm workers settled on the west bank of the Agua Fria River . Mexican canal workers and harvest workers came from the south. They founded the place El Mirage in 1937, which got an independent administration in 1951 ( incorporated ). At that time the place was a pure residential town and had the flair of a small town in the American West. That changed with the sudden increase in population in the 1990s. El Mirage grew from around 5,000 residents in 1990 to 32,607 in 2006. The city's population is expected to continue to grow rapidly over the next few decades.
Population development
Historically, the Phoenix metropolitan area is more of an agricultural area. In the last two decades, electronics and telecommunications companies in particular have invested heavily here. Due to the pleasant warm climate, the proximity to the Grand Canyon and other scenic attractions, tourism has developed enormously. In winter, Phoenix is in great demand with many older Americans who want to escape the cold weather in the north of the USA and look for their retirement home here. This is why the greater Phoenix area and thus El Mirage are currently particularly interesting for the real estate industry.
