The Elbhangfest is an art and culture festival in Dresden that takes place annually on the last weekend in June on the Elbe slopes between the districts of Loschwitz and Pillnitz . It was first organized in 1991 and is one of the largest city festivals in Dresden. In 2017, 22,000 people visited the Elbhangfest, in 2018 only 14,000. The festival is organized by a voluntary association.

Festival area and program

The festival area is closed to car traffic during the event. It is bounded by the Körnerplatz in Loschwitz and the Pillnitz Palace Park . Other important points are the rhododendron garden and the districts of Wachwitz , Niederpoyritz and Hosterwitz .

Concerts (2011 Café Jazz ), theater and dance events as well as readings take place during the festival . In addition, residents make their own contributions. The highlight is withdrawing from Loschwitz to Pillnitz parade , which is designed according to the thematic motto. As part of the festival, the Dresden Dragon Boat Festival with races on the Elbe also takes place regularly .

history

The first Elbhangfest took place on June 29 and 30, 1991. The occasion was the reconstruction of the church in Loschwitz , built by George Bähr , and the preservation of the Weinbergkirche in Pillnitz, built by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann . The festival motto was therefore “From Bähr to Pöppelmann”. For the second Elbhangfest, a year later, a non-profit association was founded to organize the festival. A highlight of the festival in 1993 was the placement of the tower ball of the Loschwitz church.
