Sir John "Jack" Lownes Eldon Gorst , GCMG , KCB (born June 25, 1861 in New Zealand , † July 12, 1911 ) was a British diplomat who was, among other things, agent and consul general for Egypt between 1907 and his death in 1911 .

Life

John "Jack" Lownes Eldon Gorst was one of four children and the only son of the politician John Eldon Gorst (1835-1916), among others, from 1866 to 1868 and again from 1875 to 1906 member of the House ( House of Commons ) , 1886 Solicitor General , between 1893 and 1896 Rector of the University of Glasgow and Vice-President of the Committee on Education from 1895 to 1902 Minister of Education, and his wife Mary Elizabeth Moore. He graduated after attending the prestigious Eton College to study law at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge and received after the end of 1895 his legal admission as a barrister . During this time he was beaten in 1900 for his services, first Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) and on July 11, 1902 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir".

As the successor to Charles Hardinge , he was in 1904 of assistive Under Secretary of State (Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs ) and held this post until his replacement by Louis du Pan Mallet 1907. As such, he was in 1904 for economy and trade, and in addition from 1906 responsible for America , Eastern Europe and the Middle East . On May 6, 1907, Gorst replaced Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer , as agent and consul general for Egypt and held this post until his death on July 12, 1911, before Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener , on November 28 He was succeeded there in 1911. Shortly before his death, he was also beaten to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) on June 19, 1911 .

Sir John "Jack" Lownes Eldon Gorst was married to Evelyn Rudd from 1903.
