Eli Apple (* 9. August 1995 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American American football poker players in the National Football League (NFL). He plays the cornerback position and is currently with the Carolina Panthers . Before that, he was already under contract with the New York Giants and the New Orleans Saints .

college

Apple, born as Eli Woodard - he only took his stepfather's surname as a student - had offers from various universities, chose Ohio State University and played college football with great success for their team, the Buckeyes . With his team he won the Big Ten Conference and even the national championship . He was able to set 86 tackles and prevent 17 passes in a total of 28 games . He also got four interceptions and one touchdown .

NFL

New York Giants

Apple was selected by the New York Giants as the 10th player in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft . He was able to establish himself as a professional straight away and was featured in 14 games in his rookie season, eleven times as a starter , and two games he had to sit out due to injury. He was mostly used on the left side or was called up as a nickelback alongside the two veterans Janoris Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie , and he also ran on the special teams . The 2017 season was overshadowed by various internal team problems, with Apple having arguments with teammates and coaches. The Safety Landon Collins publicly accused him of immaturity and called him a cancer, for which he later apologized. For the last game, Apple was even suspended for team-damaging behavior. In 2018 he was used in five of the first seven games and was able to set 23 tackles and defend five passes.

New Orleans Saints

On October 23, 2018, he switched to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a four-round pick in the 2019 draft and a seven-round pick in 2020 , where he met three former teammates from the Buckeyes with Marshon Lattimore , Vonn Bell and Michael Thomas .

Las Vegas Raiders

In March, Apple agreed on a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders , but it ultimately did not materialize.

Carolina Panthers

At the end of May 2020, he finally received a one-year contract worth three million US dollars with the Carolina Panthers .
