The Elisabeth Mann Borgese is a German research ship that has been in use for the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) since 2011 . Before that, the ship was in service from 1987 to 2010 as a multi-purpose test boat Schwedeneck (Y 860) for the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 71 (WTD 71).

The first unit of a series of three multi-purpose testing boats of class 748 the ship in May 1986 was Kröger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf built ( hull number 1531) and ran there October 14, 1986 from the stack . It was not baptized in the name Schwedeneck until February 19, 1987. After extensive testing and functional verification, the ship was in service in Eckernförde for the WTD 71 from October 20, 1987 to February 2011 .

The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania bought the Schwedeneck and had it converted into a research ship for the IOW in early 2011 at the former Peene shipyard in Wolgast, which belonged to the P + S shipyards . The ship was christened by the Bremen marine researcher and microbiologist Antje Boetius in the name of the “ambassador of the seas”, the marine conservationist Elisabeth Mann Borgese , and put into service on June 22, 2011 as a replacement for the previous professor Albrecht Penck . The ship management is carried out by the Leeraner shipping company Briese Schiffahrt .

Technical data and equipment

The ship has a diesel-electric drive . A Siemens synchronous motor with permanent magnet excitation and an output of 1,095  kW acts on a fixed pitch propeller. For the power supply are three MTU - generators with a capacity of 520 kW. An emergency generator is also installed. The ship has transverse thruster systems in the bow and stern with 147 kW each.

There is space for two 20-foot containers on the working deck at the stern of the ship ; alternatively, four 10-foot containers can be loaded.

The ship has two hydraulic cranes in the aft area. One of the cranes has a capacity of 4.5 t with a radius of up to 8 m, the other has a capacity of 1.5 t with a radius of up to 6 m. At the stern of the ship there is a stern boom that can lift up to 4 t. There is a provision crane in the fore section.

There are several laboratories on board for the research work. Eleven single and seven twin cabins are available for the crew and the scientists.

The Elisabeth Mann Borgese is mainly used in the Baltic Sea . Like Professor Albrecht Penck before it, the ship is also involved in ocean monitoring. The IOW works on the basis of an administrative agreement with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg and Rostock in environmental monitoring and thus helps to comply with Germany's obligations under the Helsinki Commission for the Protection of the Baltic Sea (HELCOM) . Until 2021, the Bundeswehr can use the ship 70 days a year for defense technology research.
