Elmira Suleymanova

Elmira Suleimanowa ( Russian Эльмира Сулейманова , Azerbaijani Elmira Süleymanova; born July 17, 1937 in Baku ) is a Soviet - Azerbaijani chemist , university professor and women's rights activist .

Life

Suleymanova attended secondary school No. 134 in Baku from 1944 to 1954. She studied 1955-1959 in Baku at the Azerbaijan State University in chemistry - Faculty with honors degree.

After graduating, Suleymanova worked at the Institute for Petrochemical Processes of the Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR, first as a laboratory assistant, then as a research assistant and finally as a laboratory manager. After postgraduate was 1968 candidate PhD of chemical sciences. In 1980 Suleymanova received her doctorate in chemical sciences. In 1988 she was appointed professor . In 1997 she became a member of the New York Academy of Sciences .

She has been active in the women's movement since the 1980s . In 1994 she founded the Shenshchina i raswitije (Woman and Development) Center , which has advisory status at the UN . She repeatedly participated in special sessions of the UN General Assembly and presented reports on human rights . In 1998, the University of Rochester recognized her as one of the world's 100 heroines in the defense of women's rights . She founded the Child to Child Peace Network . On her initiative and with her participation, the first resource center for older women was established in Azerbaijan in 2001 .

On Suleimanova's initiative and with the support of UNESCO , the Department of Human Rights and Information Law was established at the Baku State University . There she gave lectures on human rights and gender studies and trained many students. She also lectured at the Urals State Law University in Yekaterinburg (2007), Georgetown University (2008), Moscow State Institute of International Relations (2008), Russian State Humanities University in Moscow (2010) and the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) in Samsun (2012).

In 2002 Suleimonova was elected Azerbaijan's first ombudswoman (re-election 2010). In 2003 she became a member of the International Ombudsman Institute and the European Ombudsman Institute (EOI) .
