Career highlights and awards

Elvis Grbac M. (* 13. August 1970 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played for the San Francisco 49ers , Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League (NFL).

Career

At the University of Michigan , the five-foot tall Grbac led his college team to the Rose Bowl in both 1991 and 1992 . In the 1993 NFL Draft , Grbac was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 219th place, where he was the substitute for starting quarterback Steve Young for three years . With the 49ers Grbac won the Super Bowl XXIX (1995), but his rather inconspicuous performances were harshly criticized: San Francisco's Mayor Willie Brown called Grbac in 1996 a "shame for humanity", for which Brown later apologized. After three years with only nine games from the start, Grbac was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1996 .

After three rather inconspicuous years in which he argued with Rich Gannon for the position as starting quarterback and threw 38 touchdowns , but also caused 31 interceptions , Grbac 2000 had the best year of his career. He threw 28 touchdowns, gained 4,169 yards of space and was elected to the Pro Bowl . In 2001 Grbac was signed by the reigning champions, the Baltimore Ravens . There quarterback Trent Dilfer , who had led the Ravens to the title, had to go. Grbac was never able to fill the hole that the Dilfer, popular with fans and teammates, left behind: after a disappointing season (15 touchdowns, 18 interceptions, quarterback rating 71.1), the Ravens made use of an exit clause, making Grbac an "unrestricted free agent" has been. Instead of hiring another team, he announced his resignation, also because he “didn't want to ask his family of five any more to move”.

Private life

Grbac is married and has three children. One of his children suffers from spina bifida , so Grbac is involved in the fight against this disease. Grbac has a brother named Engelbert.

Grbac's family emigrated from Istria (now Croatia) to the United States in the early 1970s . Since "Elvis" is a common first name in Croatia, but has strong ties to the singer Elvis Presley in the United States , Grbac's achievements have been commented on with Elvis Presley-inspired headlines throughout his career.

During Grbac's time with the Kansas City Chiefs, he was named "Sexiest Male Athlete" by People magazine in 1998 , but this was an oversight. His quarterback team-mate Rich Gannon was supposed to get this honor, but the photographer wasn't given Gannon's name, only that he was supposed to photograph the "Chiefs starting quarterback". Because Gannon was injured at the time and Grbac was starting quarterback, Grbac was accidentally photographed. It wasn't until 2009 that this farce was exposed by Sports Illustrated .
