Life

Emil Dorner was born the son of a farmer. He came from an evangelical and widely ramified family in Central Baden, from which several members rose to high positions in the 19th century. After graduating from the Lyceum Karlsruhe , Dorner began studying law in Freiburg , Heidelberg and Berlin . In 1870 he passed the first state examination in law and took up his work as a legal intern in numerous places, including Stockach , Konstanz and Donaueschingen . During the Franco-Prussian War Dorner interrupted his training in 1870/71 and served as a volunteer with the 5th Baden Infantry Regiment No. 113 in Freiburg for a year. After participating in the Alsace march, he remained in the military as a reservist with the Landwehr and, from 1883, with the Landsturm. In 1873 Dorner passed his second state examination in law and did his legal clerkship in Buchen, Bretten , Schwetzingen and Mannheim, among others . He completed one station as a secretary in the Ministry of Justice . After a few transfers as magistrate to Pforzheim and Stockach and as district judge to Mosbach in 1881, Dorner was appointed ministerial advisor and legal adviser to the general director of the grand ducal civil list in 1883 . This was followed in 1894 by the appointments to the Secret Upper Government Council and in 1896 to a member of the Disciplinary Court for non-judicial officials. Due to his achievements, Dorner became President of the Regional Court in Karlsruhe in 1899 and President of the Higher Regional Court in 1909. Between 1900 and 1909 Dorner gave lectures on civil law as well as commercial and bill of exchange law at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . In 1901 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Freiburg. Dorner was politically active from 1905 to 1914 as a member of the First Baden Chamber of the Estates . In 1915, Dorner was retired due to a serious eye disease.

During his tenure, Dorner did a great job as a civil servant, judge and legal writer in relation to the introduction of the Reich Justice Acts in 1879 and later the Civil Code in 1900. A special area of interest was the voluntary jurisdiction and the legal police. His most important publications include the commentary on the Baden Implementation Act to the Civil Code and the Baden State Private Law, which was worked on together with Alfred Seng.
