Emil J. Walter

Emil Jakob Walter (born December 13, 1897 in Winterthur , † March 10, 1984 in Zurich ; reformed , from Winterthur and from 1942 from Zurich) was a Swiss sociologist of science .

Life

Walter was the son of the Grütlian Emil Walter and the women's rights activist and trade unionist Marie Hüni . From 1916 to 1921 he studied chemistry at the University of Zurich . In 1923 he married Alexandra Kraus. 1924 doctorate he became Dr. phil. Initially he worked as a chemist at Aluminum Industrie Aktien Gesellschaft in Chippis . In 1929 he married Rosa Marie Pohl. From 1930 to 1958 he worked as a principal teacher for chemistry and physics at the Zurich Trade School .

From 1934 to 1962 Walter was a social democratic councilor for the city of Zurich . In 1941 he married Annemarie Locher.

In 1949 Walter became a private lecturer in the history of science at the University of Zurich. In 1951 he became a lecturer at the St. Gallen Commercial College , and from 1957 to 1968 he was Associate Professor of Sociology at the same institution. “Based on a strict positivism , Walter u. a. apply the methods of natural science to sociological and psychological issues. In addition to his internationally received monographs, Walter wrote for magazines for decades. He published many articles in the quarterly journal of the Natural Research Society in Zurich , in the scientific-philosophical journal Synthesis and in the journal Rote Revue or Profil .
