The nature reserve consists of several sub-areas, which run along the Emmer from the Schieder See (also Emmerstausee) to the state border with Lower Saxony near Bad Pyrmont , a section of the Eschenbach, a left tributary of the Emmer and the North Rhine-Westphalian section of the Wörmke, a right tributary the Emmer, stretch. It places the mostly near-natural rivers and floodplain areas as well as adjacent areas under protection. In the area of the Wörmke, the lower reaches of some tributaries are also included in the nature reserve.

The area covered by the Biological Station Lippe e. V. is under nature protection since 1992. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Lippe district.

description

The rivers are characterized by their predominantly natural course and the underwater vegetation. They have impact and sliding slopes , natural bottom slides , pools , sand and gravel banks and steep banks. The floodplain areas of the rivers are characterized by extensive grassland areas , some of which are characterized as wet and damp grassland .

In the floodplain area there are also flood channels and oxbow lakes. In addition, orchards , groups of trees and hedges can be found. Included in the nature reserve are also adjacent natural forest areas and semi-arid grassland in the slopes.

The Emmer, which is separated from its upper course by the Schieder See, has dug deep into the surrounding floodplain. In the past, wet and wet grassland only occurs locally due to drainage measures. B. in the eastern part of the floodplain area between Lügde and Bad Pyrmont. The course of the river is accompanied locally by remains of alluvial forest. In Lügde, the Emmer is regulated by a weir .

The floodplain of the Emmer is temporarily flooded despite the reservoir, as it can only absorb small high water peaks.

The Wörmke is lined over long stretches of riparian wood made of willow and alder . It runs mostly close to nature, but is straightened between the Lügder districts of Sabbenhausen and Ratsiek. In the upper course, the water seeps into the layers of the upper shell limestone , so that the course of the river here sometimes only carries little or no water in dry weather.

The Eschenbach only presents itself in sections as a near-natural body of water. In the lower section it is mostly straightened, in some cases bank reinforcements are available through stone pouring. It is only accompanied in places by wood on the banks. The valley floor and slopes are predominantly occupied by grassland and forest areas, with the forest areas primarily consisting of coniferous forest .

The grassland areas in the nature reserve are managed with different intensities. Chance are arable land to find. Through maintenance measures such as grazing and de-puddling , lean grassland and semi-arid grassland are preserved. In addition, there are renaturation and rehabilitation measures as well as the conversion of arable land to grassland.
