The study commission “Overcoming the Consequences of the SED Dictatorship in the Process of German Unity” was set up by the German Bundestag in September 1995 and was the successor to the Study Commission “Dealing with the History and Consequences of the SED Dictatorship” . She dealt with the history of the GDR, the consequences of the SED dictatorship in Germany and the transformation process. The commission published its final report in June 1998. One of the results was the establishment of the federal foundation to come to terms with the SED dictatorship . During its work, the study commission conducted 25 public and 28 non-public hearings, with a total of 292 contemporary witnesses and scientists being heard. In addition, 160 expert opinions and reports were commissioned. Together with the final report and the hearing minutes, they were published in 17 volumes with around 16,000 printed pages in a joint edition by Nomos and Suhrkamp publishers.
