Erdowie, Erdowo, Erdogan is the title and chorus of a song about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , which was broadcast on March 17th, 2016 in the NDR satellite program extra 3 on the first . He was often quoted as “Erdowie, Erdowo, Erdowahn” in the discussion about the song, aided by the pronunciation of the name Erdoğan [ˈɛɾdoɑn]. The broadcast of the song caused the German ambassador to Turkey , Martin Erdmann , to besummoned twice, which the press oftenratedas an interference with freedom of the press . Turkey's continued demand to cancel the program was ignored, as was the demand for the song to be deleted.

Melody and parts of the text come from the song Irgendwie, somewhere, sometime by the German musician Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and the band Nena  (1984).

"Erdowahn" is a Portmanteau word , composed of the surname Erdoğan and the word madness . Erdoğan is the surname of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and means: "brave, brave, courageously born" or "born as a soldier (fighter)", formed from the elements he ("man"; "soldier") and doğan (" the born ”, from“ doğmak ”, ie“ to be born ”). The song consists of the lyrics, accompanied by TV pictures and texts from news programs, based on the melody of Nenas "Somehow, somewhere, sometime".

The text begins with "He lives big, the boss of the Bosporus ", in the background his palace , a building with 1000 rooms, built without a building permit in Ataturk Orman Çiftliği . He then moves on to domestic political issues such as freedom of the press: “He's got a neck with freedom of the press” and “A journalist who writes something that doesn't suit Erdoğan will be in jail tomorrow,” with pictures of the arrests of critical journalists and the storm of a television station, freedom of expression : “He doesn't think long and drives through the night with tear gas and water cannons ”, with corresponding images of state violence against his own people - on foreign policy issues such as diplomatic protocol and dealing with the Chancellor: “Be charming, because he has you in his hand ”, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel , who is forced to shake hands by him. The refrain is "Erdowie, Erdowo, Erdowahn". The song was broadcast on March 17, 2016 in the political NDR satirical program extra 3 in the first. Since then, it can be seen in the station's media library and on YouTube , where the video was also provided with optional English subtitles. There is also a translation into Turkish. Two weeks later, on March 30, 2016, a German version with Turkish subtitles was broadcast in the satirical program extra 3 .

The Turkish President was annoyed and had the German ambassador, Martin Erdmann , summoned twice to the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara ( diplomatic sanction ). The ambassador declared there on March 22nd that the rule of law , the independence of the judiciary and the protection of fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press and freedom of expression, are valuable assets that must be protected together. The then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: "I think that we can expect from a partner country of the European Union [...] that it shares our common European values." The Chancellor did not comment. The EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker supported the German government. The decision to appoint the German ambassador is "not welcomed" by him. The events escalated on March 31 with the ZDF satirical program Neo Magazin Royale , in which Jan Böhmermann declared that he wanted to explain the difference between legal satire and illegal criticism in a satirical way , and presented an example of a mockery poem about the Turkish president.

On March 23 of the following year, Extra-3 broadcast a second song based on the song 99 Luftballons, also by Nena .
