Erik Simon (born August 21, 1987 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former German ski jumper .

Career

Simon started in the Alpine Cup and FIS junior jumping competitions since 2002 . In 2003 he was able to secure the title of German junior champion. In January 2004 he started in Brotterode for the first time in the Continental Cup (COC), but only finished behind. After taking part in other Alpine Cups and junior competitions, he started at other COCs in December 2004. After initially only taking places outside of the points, he was able to take second place on December 28, 2004 in Engelberg, somewhat surprisingly. In the further course of the winter of 2004/05 he took part in other Continental Cups and was able to rank among the top 15th several times. Towards the end of winter he took part in the Junior World Championships 2005 in Rovaniemi , where he finished 11th in individual jumping and ninth with the German team.

In the summer of 2005 he took part in several COC summer competitions, with a tenth place in Kranj being his best result. In winter 2005/06 he started consistently in the Continental Cup and occupied places in the midfield. At the summer COCs 2006 he consistently missed the finals, but was able to improve in the winter of 2006/07. He took part in the Four Hills Tournament 2006/07 , but did not qualify for the first round in any of the jumping competitions. In mid-February he was able to celebrate another COC podium with third place in Westby . After taking part in other Continental Cups and finishing third again on March 18, 2006 in Zakopane , he was able to qualify for the first time for the World Cup at the ski flying that took place at the end of the season in Planica .

After he started again in the COC at the beginning of summer 2007, he took part in the Summer Grand Prix in the second half of summer , where he was able to score points in a first-class series of competitions for the first time on September 9, 2007 with 20th place in Hakuba . In the winter of 2007/08 he constantly switched back and forth between the World Cup and the Continental Cup. While he was placed in the front of the field in some jumping competitions in the Continental Cup, he usually did not survive the qualification in the World Cup. In the three jumps for which he qualified, he could not reach the second round. In the summer of 2008 he again took part in some COC competitions, with a fourth place in Lillehammer being his best result. In addition, he was able to qualify for some Grand Prix competitions. While he had no chance at the jumping event in Hinterzarten, which took place early in the summer , he was able to achieve his best result in a first-class competition with 17th place in the jumping competition held on October 3rd, 2008 in Klingenthal .

In winter 2008/09 he started exclusively in the World Cup, but missed the qualification in most of the competitions. In the two jumping competitions for which he qualified, he landed on the 50th place. After he had been disqualified from qualifying for the New Year's competition of the Four Hills Tournament in Garmisch-Partenkirchen because of skis that were too long , he switched back to the Continental Cup. There he was always able to achieve the points and even place in the top ten several times. At the beginning of the Nordic tournament in 2009 he switched back to the World Cup. After he had already qualified for the first competition in Lahti , he was able to collect his first World Cup point at the second competition on March 10th in Kuopio . Five days later in Vikersund he succeeded again. Since then he has not been able to score any more World Cup points.

Erik Simon ended his career and has been chief ski technician of the German national ski jumping team since the 2012/13 season. He lives in Marienberg .
