The medlars ( Eriobotrya ) are a genus of the pome fruit family (Pyrinae) in the rose family (Rosaceae). The best-known representative of the genus is the Japanese loquat ( Eriobotrya japonica ), which is known in Europe as an ornamental plant and increasingly also because of its tasty fruits.
description
Eriobotrya species are evergreen trees and shrubs . The mostly stalked leaves are simple. The leaf margins are smooth or serrated. Stipules are present.
The terminal, paniculate inflorescences contain many flowers. The hermaphrodite, radially symmetrical flowers are five-fold. The five sepals are still clearly recognizable from the fruits. The five white or yellow petals are nailed. There are 20 stamens . The lower ovary consists of two to five carpels . The two to five styluses, which are often hairy, are only fused at their base.
The bent-back sepals are easily recognizable on the apple-shaped fruit. The fruits contain only a few large seeds.
