The origin of the place is related to the development of the Habbeckegrund for mining around Halberbracht and Meggen in the second half of the 19th century. The mining field Ernestus was awarded to Jacob Simmersbach from Altenhundem by the mining authority Siegen in October 1854 for iron ore and pebbles. The mother (owner or lender) was obliged to give the mine a name. It is not known what the choice of the name Ernestus was based on.

After initially mining in the Halberbracht area, the Ernestus shaft was sunk (sunk) in 1861. A new development stage in mining began in Ernestus with the "underground" mining (see also Halberbracht # Mining )

In the same year the Ruhr-Sieg-Bahn (connecting the cities of Hagen , Altenhundem and Siegen ) was completed, which contributed significantly to the economic upswing in this area. In the opening year, Ernestus belonged to the English company Sigena Sulfur Mining Co. LtD, London. After various changes of ownership, the mine field was finally taken over by the Sachtleben Group. (See also: Halberbracht # Mining )

As the mining industry shrank, which eventually led to its complete closure in 1992, Ernestus' population also decreased. While the place had 63 inhabitants in 1939, at the end of June 2020 there were only 10. The former colliery area is currently being operated by the Hundefreunde Südsauerland e. V. used as a dog exercise area.

Incorporation

Ernestus belonged to the municipality of Elspe until June 30, 1969, and was then incorporated into the new town of Lennestadt on July 1, 1969.
