Ernst Boll (born September 21, 1817 in Neubrandenburg ; † January 20, 1868 there ) was a private scholar, a German natural scientist and historian . He is considered to be one of the founders of nature research in Mecklenburg . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Boll ".

Life

Ernst Boll was the youngest son of the Neubrandenburg pastor Franz Christian Boll (1775–1818) and his wife Friederike, b. Brückner (1780–1839), a daughter of the Neubrandenburg doctor Adolf Brückner (1744–1823).

Boll studied theology and natural sciences in Berlin and Bonn . After completing his studies, he worked as a private tutor in Friedland (Mecklenburg) in 1842 . Encouraged by his uncle Gustav Brückner (1789–1860) in Ludwigslust , who had written the first geological description of Mecklenburg, he turned to geology first . Publications on this were made in 1846 and 1850. He also dealt with botany , meteorology , petrography and zoology .

The constantly ailing Boll did not find an opportunity to set up his own household. For long stretches without a steady income he lived until his death in the family of his older brother Franz Boll (1805-1875), who was pastor and praepositus in Neubrandenburg, at the same time taught the lower classes of the local city school and spent his free time with historical and Church history studies. Both Boll brothers complemented each other. When Ernst Boll began to work on his history of Mecklenburg in the 1850s (published in 2 volumes as private print in 1856; 1995 reprint with various additions), Brother Franz also took part. While this was unusually modern in his considerations at the time Was severely hostile to circles of monarchically oriented regional historians, today it is undisputedly one of the most important standard works of Mecklenburg regional historiography.

In 1846 Ernst Boll was one of the founding members of the Association of Friends of Mecklenburg's Natural History . From 1847 until his death in 1868 he edited almost single-handedly the yearbooks of the association, which appeared under the title Archive of Friends ... and also worked as its sole secretary (= managing director). This series of publications by the association, for which Boll himself wrote numerous scientific articles, especially on botany and geology, is one of the most comprehensive scientific documentations in what was then Mecklenburg.

Politically, he became involved in the Neubrandenburg reform movement in 1848 and was an advocate of liberal views. This led to the first encounter with the writer Fritz Reuter , who later became a solid bond of friendship during Reuter's time in Neubrandenburg.

Boll's extensive collection of rocks and fossils came into the collection of the Neubrandenburg Museum after his death and is now in the Natural History Collection of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Müritzeum in Waren .

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Parliament has been awarding the Ernst Boll Environment Prize in honor of Ernst Boll since 1992.
