Ernst Bormann

Ernst Bormann (born November 5, 1897 in Kirchbrak ; † August 1, 1960 in Düsseldorf ) was a German officer , most recently Major General of the Air Force in World War II .

Bormann joined the Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 82 on August 17, 1915, during the First World War, as a volunteer and flag junior . There he advanced to lieutenant and company officer until March 21, 1917 as the war continued . After successfully completing his pilot training at Flieger Ersatzabteilung 7 from March 22 to 23 October 1917, he was assigned to Flieger Ersatzabteilung 12 on October 24, 1917. From December 22, 1917 to January 7, 1918 there was a short stay at Army Airplane Park 9. From January 8 to April 20, 1918, Bormann was a pilot in Aviation Department 42. After a brief assignment to Airplane Park 6, he was on May 4th Transferred as pilot to Jagdstaffel 2 "Boelcke". There he served until the demobilization of the squadron at the Brieg Air Base at the end of March 1919. In total, he achieved 17 aerial victories during the war.

Of the 24 March 1919 served until March 31, 1920 Bormann as a company officer in the Defense Infantry Regiment 72 Provisional Reichswehr before it with the character as a lieutenant retired from active service.

Bormann then studied and was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD.

From August 1, 1925 to the end of September 1930, he was a teacher at the secret flying school in Lipetsk ( Soviet Union ), and later also in Germany. On September 1, 1934, he was officially reactivated as a captain in the Luftwaffe, which was under construction. Until the end of March 1935 he was a consultant in the Reich Ministry of Aviation . On April 1, 1935, he was transferred to the Boelcke Combat Squadron as a squadron captain. In June 1938 he changed as commander of the III. Group to the Richthofen Jagdgeschwader.

From November 1, 1938 to the end of July 1940, Bormann was commander of III. Group in the Lehrgeschwader 1 in Greifswald . On August 1, 1940, he was appointed commander of the Gablingen pilot school near Augsburg , and then on February 26, 1941, commodore of Kampfgeschwader 76 . On October 5, 1941, Bormann was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and on September 3, 1942 with the Oak Leaves for the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (119th award). From January 8, 1943, Bormann served for a few weeks as the commander of the combat units of Luftflotte 4 , but was already appointed Fliegerführer Krim on February 1, 1943. From the end of June 1943 to the end of September 1944, Bormann was available for various commands and special tasks. On October 1, 1944, he became airport area commander in Moravia , where he was taken prisoner by the Soviets on May 10, 1945 . On October 9, 1955, he was released from prisoner-of-war camp 5110/48 Woikowo . He was thus one of the last German returnees from the war .
