Ernst Otto Karl Ludwig Freiherr von Mirbach (born December 24, 1844 in Düsseldorf , † April 6, 1925 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and court official.

Life

Origin and career

Mirbach was the eldest son of the Prussian government councilor Otto Magnus von Mirbach and Antoinette Schenck from Darmstadt . Due to frequent transfers of his father, Mirbach grew up in Darmstadt, Trier , Posen and Berlin .

After graduating from high school, he served in the Guard Fusilier Regiment and took part in the campaigns in 1864 ( German-Danish War ), 1866 ( German War ) and 1871 ( German-French War ).

In Godesberg he met his wife Camilla Orban from Liège , whom he married in 1871 after returning home as a wounded man. As the successor to Leopold von Ende , he became chamberlain in the court of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia in 1881 and served with his wife Auguste Victoria . After Wilhelm's accession to the throne , he was appointed chief steward of the empress and remained so until 1914.

In 1875, 1877 and 1884 his sons Magnus, Werner and Siegfried were born in Berlin and Potsdam .

Representing the Empress in charity and church associations was connected with his work. Mirbach headed her cabinet, corresponded for her with the authorities and managed her assets and her budget (casket). Victoria Luise described him as a " humorous, kind, old gentleman who did not always have it easy in the female court ".

Mirbach was significantly involved in the charitable causes of the queen and was constantly collecting money for it. As a result of Waldersee Assembly of 28 November 1887 in the Wilhelm II. To " use against the neglect of the masses " called to " the impending danger on the part of social democracy and anarchism oppose " was May 1888 Ecclesiastical Evangelical the Hilfsverein founded. In it, along with all the German provinces, Mirbach was represented for the Empress. In 1890, with his participation from the Church Building Commission (1888), the Protestant Church Building Association , which is active again today , developed and built around 70 new churches by 1930. Against concerns, Mirbach repeatedly stated that it was only intended to support the Church's Inner Mission .

Dismissal request

In 1902, Mirbach called for a collection to line the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church with mosaics on the occasion of the silver wedding of the imperial couple. The letter from the empress's cabinet was official and went through the interior minister to all district administrators of the provinces, who were now asked to set up committees for this matter. In the Rhineland in particular , it remained incomprehensible why collections should be made for a church in Charlottenburg .

Mirbach was attacked in the press for the ultimate demand. In addition, in the trial against the Pommersche Hypothekenbank he had acknowledged 325,000 marks that could no longer be found. Chancellor Bernhard von Bülow called for Mirbach's resignation from court offices. He submitted a request for dismissal. Although this was not complied with, the cabinet business and the Empress's budget were withdrawn from him.

Redeemer Chapel in Mirbach

In 1902 he built the Erlöserkirche in Mirbach in memory of the place where his family came from .

It was Mirbach's merit to have significantly advanced the construction of the new church on the Mount of Olives, which the prince had promised on his journey to the Orient on the occasion of the inauguration of the Jerusalem Church of the Redeemer in 1898, and to having collected the money for it (cost 2.5 million marks ). In 1910, the Church of the Assumption was inaugurated by Eitel Friedrich von Prussia together with knights of the Order of St. John .

In February 1914, the court granted his resignation due to reasons of age. He also received the title Ober truchseß and an honorary theological doctorate from the University of Bonn . On November 27, 1918, he said goodbye to Empress Auguste Victoria briefly and for the last time when she set off from the Potsdam Wildlife Park into exile in Haus Doorn .

Mirbach died three years after the Empress and shortly after his 80th birthday. He is buried in the cemetery in Bornstedt .
