Ernst Schubert (historian)

Ernst Schubert (born May 23, 1941 in Bemerode ; † March 18, 2006 in Hanover ) was a German historian and most recently professor of Lower Saxony regional history at the University of Göttingen .

Life

From 1960 Schubert studied history, German, geography and social studies at the University of Würzburg , where he became a member of the Alemannia Makaria Würzburg country team . In 1967 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the estates of the Hochstift Würzburg under Hanns Hubert Hofmann . In 1968 he then received a position as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Franconian State Research at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , first with Gerhard Pfeiffer , later with Alfred Wendehorst . There he completed his habilitation in 1974 in Middle and Modern History and National History. His habilitation thesis “King and Empire. Studies on German Constitutional History in the Late Middle Ages ”was awarded the habilitation prize from the Erlangen-Nuremberg University Association.

Appointments to the Universities of Konstanz (1980) and Göttingen (1985) followed, there as full professor for the history of Lower Saxony. In addition, Schubert was director of the Göttingen Institute for Regional Historical Research . In 1998 he was elected chairman of the historical commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen ; since 1999 he was a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . In 1998 he received the Lower Saxony Prize for Science. Schubert was a co-founder of the Internet magazine Concilium Medii Aevi . In 2000 he was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .

His main research interests were the history of Lower Saxony, the social and constitutional history of the Middle Ages and early modern times, and environmental history . As successor to Hans Patze, Schubert was the editor of the five-volume, seven-volume series History of Lower Saxony , where he wrote the first volume of the second volume, Politics, Constitution, Economy from the 9th to the end of the 15th century for the most part himself.
