action
On June 9, 1804 Ludwig van Beethoven rehearsed his latest composition in the palace of Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz in the presence of the nobility, the 3rd Symphony ("Eroica") dedicated to the First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte .
While the ladies show enthusiasm, the other aristocrats and musicians react distantly to the demanding music. Beethoven's enthusiasm for Napoleon Bonaparte, who seems to be advocating the ideals of the French Revolution , is also a topic of conversation.
Meanwhile, the widowed Josephine von Deym rejects Beethoven's marriage proposal, as the law would deprive her of care for her children if she married a commoner. In order to give Beethoven the financial security he needs to compose, Prince Lobkowitz offers him a fee of 2000 florins for the exclusive use of the symphony for six months .
Joseph Haydn , who was present at the rehearsal, prophesies that everything will be different from this day on because of the novelty of the “Eroica”. While Beethoven reports to his pupil Ferdinand Ries that his first hearing impairments are noticeable, he learns that Napoleon has crowned himself emperor. The musician furiously crumples the title page of the “Eroica” score and throws it to the ground.
Awards
In 2004 the film won the “ Prix Italia ” in the “Performing Arts” category.
