The Archeparchy of Mosul ( Latin: Archieparchia Mausiliensis Chaldaeorum ) is a Chaldean Catholic Archeparch with its seat in Mosul , Iraq, unified with the Roman Catholic Church .
The diocese was established on February 14, 1967; The forerunner was a prelature . The archepary is led by an archbishop who is also pastor of the St. Paul's Procathedral . The current diocese was built by Archbishop George Garmo . On December 7, 2004, the cathedral was badly damaged in a bomb attack. The bishopric was then rebuilt about 10 km away.
Since 2008, the Archeparchy of Mosul has been the focus of an emerging persecution of Christians in Iraq, with threats from Islamist militias, the introduction of special taxes or the threat of marrying Christian daughters to Muslim men. Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho was kidnapped and murdered in 2008.
The Dair Mar Elia (St. Elijah) abbey, founded in 571 AD, is located in the diocesan area .
