action

In their third millennium, the people of the earth have found a peaceful life, both large and small. This is possible because they control their emotions extremely and, above all, rely on reason. On a distant planet, however, they find a medieval civilization that they are now using to test whether people actually no longer have barbaric instincts within them. For this purpose, the scout Anton is dropped off, in whose eye a camera is implanted that transmits everything he sees to a spaceship circling the planet.

Living in the identity of the noble Don Rumata in the city of Arkanar, Anton finds it increasingly difficult to endure the misery of the people oppressed by the king and the unscrupulous advisor Don Reba. He tries to accelerate progress and to set in motion a kind of clearing-up, although he is strictly forbidden to intervene in the world he finds. He plans a revolution and is almost worshiped as a god for his abilities; however, he falls in love. In the following bloody confrontations the king and Don Reba find their deaths.

While Arkanar is sinking into anarchy and terror, Anton alias Don Rumata is picked up by the spaceship, because the test is over: It was Anton whose reactions were to be tested.

Reviews

“At Fleischmann, confused crowd scenes often replace dramaturgical art; he just as often confuses carnage with tension. The film dispenses with the usual science fiction technical orgies, the production of which was nevertheless very expensive at 35 million marks. "

"The old dilemma of the New German Film - improvisation for the devil to hide dilettantism, alcoholism and artistic impotence."

“An elaborate, content overloaded trivial science fiction film that barely reveals any sense of characters, scene structure or timing. The actual topic, the confrontation of a highly developed culture with its apparently overcome drive structure, degenerates into pseudo-philosophical ballast. "

"The film adaptation of Fleischmann [...] sinks into the superficial charms of the ambitious décor, of the costume and scenery, in the accumulation of violent effects that have broken away from any designation function, in a pompous musical accompaniment of booming synthesizer sounds, in a mixture of fantasy, War and science fiction adventures that leave no room for an intellectual game of thought.
