The Esselhofer Bruch is a nature reserve with a size of 8.14  hectares in the Dalbke district of the city of Bielefeld . It is managed with the number BI-031. The area was designated as a nature reserve in 1993. It serves to maintain a wet heath area with transitions to the wet pedunculate oak - birch forest , fallow wet meadow areas, polluted willow stands and their endangered animal and plant species.

The protection zone is located at a height of around 125 meters in the north-west of the village of Dalbke, a district of the Sennestadt district of Bielefeld . With the oak-beech forest of Strothbach , which lies around 300 meters to the south, and the Sprungbach-Mittellauf , which runs around 250 meters to the north, there are two further areas designated as nature reserves in the immediate vicinity.

Characteristic

The Esselhofer Bruch is a damp and wet forest area that is primarily characterized as a mixed pine and birch forest. Due to the boggy location, the area has a pronounced layer of bushes and herbs, in which stocks of blueberries , bracken , pipe grass , bell heather and peat moss can be found. Furthermore, the Esselhofer Bruch has dry heather fragments typical of the Sennes and in the northern area also birch break forest, which is typical for nutrient-poor, acidic soil . In the north-east of the protection area, open wet grassland connects, in which tall herbaceous fields and pollarded willows can be found.
