The oak-beech forest Strothbach is a nature reserve with a size of 2.59  hectares in the Dalbke district of the city of Bielefeld . It is listed with the number BI-032 and was designated as a nature reserve in 1993. It serves to preserve and maintain a near-natural beech - oak forest , which due to its old age is of particular importance for tree cavity dwelling species.

location

The protection zone is located entirely in the area of Dalbke, a part of the Bielefeld district of Sennestadt . The eastern end of the area is formed by the Senne-Bahn , which runs from Bielefeld to Paderborn , while industrial sites are adjacent to the oak and beech forest in the south and west. The northern end is formed by the eponymous Strothbach . About 300 meters to the north is the Esselhofer Bruch, another area designated as a nature reserve.

Characteristic

Characteristic of the forest, which is barely more than four football fields, is the population of holly trees and the population of old oaks and red beeches , the trunks of which often have tree hollows and cracks in the trunk. A census in March 2010 resulted in 65 cave trees with at least 90 woodpecker holes , of which 53 caves could be assigned to the black woodpecker . The sometimes very old caves are also populated by the species green woodpecker , small woodpecker , tawny owl and stock dove . In addition, Bielefeld's largest tree-breeding colony of jackdaws with around 20 breeding pairs is located within the protection zone .

The bark and trunk crevices in the trees form a habitat for different bat species. When mapping in 2008, the species great noctule , little noctule , brown long-eared bat and pipebat were detected in the area.
