description

Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus eremophila grows in the form of the mallee - eucalyptus , this is a growth form that is more shrub -shaped than tree-shaped , there are usually several trunks that form a lignotuber or as a tree that reaches heights of up to 2 to 8 meters. The bark is smooth and gray-brown, brown or yellow all over the tree. There are oil glands in the marrow of the young branches, but not in the bark.

In Eucalyptus eremophila , heterophyllia is present. The leaves are always divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf stalks are narrowly flattened or channel-shaped. On middle-aged specimens, the leaf blade is elliptical to ovate, straight, with entire margins and a dull gray-green. The leaf blades, glossy gray-green on the upper and lower sides, on adult specimens are narrowly lanceolate or elliptical, relatively thick, straight, taper towards the base of the blade and their upper end can be pointed, blunt or rounded. The side nerves, which are barely recognizable, extend from the median nerve at an acute or very acute angle. The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are in two parts.

Inflorescence and flower

On the side of an inflorescence stem with a width of up to 3 mm in cross section, narrowly flattened or angular inflorescences, there are approximately three to seven-flowered partial inflorescences in compound total inflorescences . The flower buds are beak-shaped and not floured or frosted blue-green. The sepals form a calyptra that falls off early. The smooth calyptra is beak-shaped, three times as long as the smooth flower cup (hypanthium) and narrower than this. The flowers are white, creamy white, yellow, pink or red. The flowering period in Western Australia extends from August to December.

fruit

The fruit is cylindrical, pear-shaped or bell-shaped. The disc is pressed in, the fruit fans stick out.

Occurrence

The natural range of Eucalyptus eremophila is the south of Western Australia , around Geraldton , and the southern part of central Western Australia, around Kalgoorlie-Boulder , Albany and Esperance . Eucalyptus eremophila comes to independent administrative districts Bruce rock , Coolgardie , Dumbleyung , Dundas , Esperance , Jerramungup , Kalgoorlie , Kent , Kondinin , Kulin , Lake Grace , Quairading , Ravensthorpe and Yilgarn in the regions Goldfields-Esperance , Great Southern and Wheatbelt ago .

Eucalyptus eremophila grows on yellow or red sand , clay or loam soils or on poor soils over granite . Eucalyptus eremophila can be found on undulating plains, sand dunes and hills.

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1904 by Ludwig Diels as a variety of the species Eucalyptus occidentalis under the name ( Basionym ) Eucalyptus occidentalis var. Eremophila Diels under the title Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae occidentalis. Contributions to the knowledge of the plants of Western Australia, their distribution and their living conditions in Botanical Yearbooks for Systematics , Volume 35 (2), p. 442. The type material shows the inscription in distr. Coolgardie pr. Boorabbin in glareosis fl. M. Nov. (E. PRITZEL, Pl. Austr. Occ. 917), pr. munic. Coolgardie in fruticetis apertis arenoso-lutosis flor. m. Oct. (D. 5237), in frutecis apertis lutoso-lapidosis fl. M. Nov. pr. Gilmores (D. 5264) . Maiden gave her the rank of Eucalyptus eremophila (Diels) Maiden in 1921 in Journal and Proceedings of the Royal Society of New South Wales , Volume 54, p. 71.
