Andreas Heinrich Eugen Zoellner , since 1917 Knight von Zoellner (born August 18, 1866 in Regensburg , † February 19, 1945 in Prien am Chiemsee ) was a Bavarian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Eugen grew up as the son of the merchant and councilor Gottlieb Heinrich Zoellner in a Protestant home.

Military career

After he had passed his Abitur at a humanistic grammar school , Zoellner joined the 11th Infantry Regiment "von der Tann" of the Bavarian Army in 1884 as an officer candidate . There he was second lieutenant in 1886 and from 1891 as a battalion adjutant. From 1894 to 1897 Zoellner graduated from the War Academy , which made him qualified for the general staff and the subject. In the further course of his military career, with the exception of a position as a company commander in the 2nd Infantry Regiment "Kronprinz" in 1902 and as a battalion commander in the Infantry Body Regiment in 1908, he was only employed in various general staffs.

With the outbreak of the First World War , Zoellner was Major General and Chief of Staff of the Quartermaster General . On October 1, 1916 he took command of the 49th Reserve Division , with which he participated in the fighting against Romania . In January 1917 Zoellner was given command of the 2nd Infantry Division on the Western Front . In the same year Zoellner was honored with the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Bavarian Crown for his services . Associated with this was the conferral of personal nobility, and from this point on he was allowed to call himself Ritter von Zoellner.

After the armistice of Compiègne , he led his troops back home and took over the 6th division there in mid-December 1918 . 1919 he was also with the perception of the business of the commanding general of the III. Army Corps instructed. Shortly afterwards, he was put up for disposition as lieutenant general .

family

In 1893 Zoellner married Emma Kirchner. The two children Emma Margaretha Johanna and Otto emerged from the marriage.
