history

The area of the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church Eutin is the area of the former Lübeck monastery . The originally Roman Catholic diocese was established in the 10th century, initially with its seat in Oldenburg in Holstein and from 1158 in Lübeck . The offices of Eutin and Schwartau and other cathedral chapter estates belonged to the prince-bishops' secular territory ( Hochstift ) , but not the city of Lübeck and other Holstein diocesan areas. After the city of Lübeck became a free imperial city in 1226 , the Lübeck bishopric (with its seat in Eutin) had nothing in common with the city of Lübeck except the name. At the end of the 13th century, the prince-bishop moved his official residence from Lübeck to Eutin . The Reformation was introduced in 1530/35 . The Diocese of Lübeck went under, but the bishopric continued to exist as the territory of the Holy Roman Empire .

From 1555 Lutheran administrators ruled Eutin as prince-bishops . In 1773 the reigning prince-bishop received the counties of Oldenburg (in Oldenburg) and Delmenhorst through the Treaty of Tsarskoe Selo . He was now in personal union Duke of Oldenburg and Prince-Bishop of Lübeck. In 1803 the Lübeck bishopric was secularized and connected as a secular principality of Lübeck with the Duchy of Oldenburg , from 1815 Grand Duchy, which now consisted of two separate areas (in 1817 the Principality of Birkenfeld was added as a further exclave). From 1810 to 1814 the Principality of Lübeck was occupied by the French. The church of the Duchy of Oldenburg was subordinate to the respective Duke or Grand Duke of Oldenburg. Since, unlike in the Lutheran north, all Protestant parishes in Birkenfeld were united , they formed the separate Evangelical Church of the Principality of Birkenfeld from 1843 .

After the First World War and the elimination of the sovereign church regiment , the state of Oldenburg became a free state while maintaining its three-part area. The regional church, which until then comprised the regions of Oldenburg and the Principality of Lübeck, was divided into two independent regional churches, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg and the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of the Province of Lübeck in the Free State of Oldenburg, which was founded in 1921 . In 1937, the Lübeck part of the state was separated from Oldenburg under the Greater Hamburg Act and incorporated into the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein . Ecclesiastically, however, the area remained as an independent regional church under the name Evangelical Lutheran Church Eutin , which joined the EKD in 1948.

The prince of Oldenburg was the head of the common Lutheran regional church until 1918. Since then, a provost headed the church, first Paul Rahtgens (1921–1929). Wilhelm Kieckbusch had held this office since 1930 . He led the regional church from 1961 with the title bishop until the merger on January 1, 1977. Before the merger, the regional church comprised about 20 parishes. Since then, these communities have formed a provost office (today a parish district ) within the Holstein-Lübeck district.

Hymn books

Since the area of this regional church belonged to Oldenburg, the Oldenburg hymn books were also in use there:

  • Hymnal for public and domestic devotion for the Duchy of Oldenburg , with an appendix of prayers; Oldenburg, from 1791
  • Hymn book for the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of the Duchy of Oldenburg , Oldenburg, 1868, later with the title Hymnal for the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of the Oldenburg regional church

In 1930, as in all regional churches in what is now northern Elbe, the unified hymn book of the Evangelical Lutheran regional churches in Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Lübeck, Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Eutin was introduced, and later the Evangelical church hymn book - edition for the Evangelical Lutheran regional churches Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburg, Hamburg, Lübeck and Eutin .
