The Exe (originally short for parade ground or parade gap , Danish Ekserserpladsen or Ekserserløkke ) in Flensburg is a centuries-old fairground and meeting place. In addition, the Exe and the surrounding buildings form a district of the same name within the Friesischer Berg district .

History of the exe

Whitsun feast and bird shooting

The Knudsgilde existed even before the year 1284, the year in which city charter was obtained , which at some point began to celebrate the Whitsun feast on the second or third day of Pentecost on the square above the city on a hill . During this festival there was a bird shooting . Instead, there was a bird pole (also called a bird tree or parrot tree) on which the so-called parrot was attached. The bird shooting, in which the rifle guilds participated, took place until the middle of the 18th century. In addition, in the Middle Ages, citizens' assemblies were probably held on the square, where important legal statutes were adopted. Such a meeting on the square in front of the city is recorded on the Wednesday before Pentecost in 1548, which is the first time that the square is attested. The actual meeting place of the citizenship, however, was the Thingplatz within the city.

At first the square was probably called Ratsherrenkoppel or Ratsherrenlücke. The name Ratsherrenlücke is attested to the year 1768. With gap (formerly common: written Lycke, the Danish word Løkke accordingly), a fenced plot of land is called.

Cattle market and parade ground

At the northern edge of the square, in the area of today's Friesische Strasse , was the so-called Vieh-Markts-Platz around 1779. Towards the end of the 18th century, it appears that mainly oxen were sold there, which is why this area was subsequently called the ox market. The horses were traded a little further east on the Südermarkt .

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Danish military used the councilor gap for drill , which is why the square was called the drill gap. After a larger parade ground was set up where the Flensburg-Schäferhaus airfield is located today , the old place was given the name "Kleine Parzierslücke". In 1849 the German-language city map of Wergeland first recorded the name "Exercier Platz" as a name. But since Lücke is female, this could be the reason why the feminine article, i.e. the exe , prevailed in popular parlance when using the abbreviation Exe and not the exer as at the parade ground in Kiel .

In the First Schleswig-Holstein War 1848-1851, the wagons with equipment gathered there, as well as in the Second Schleswig-Holstein War in 1864 and in the Franco-German War in 1870/71. At the end of the 1850s, the space next to it was also used for cattle markets . In the 1880s, the Kramermarkt took place twice a year , with which today's use as a fairground and circus place began. A third parade ground was created around 1910 in Mürwik , where the Imperial Navy had settled, in the upper area of the torpedo station . A parade hall that was built at the same time belonged to this parade ground, which, in contrast to the parade ground, has been preserved today, but was later renamed the Morse Hall and is now used for other purposes.

Book burning

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , books were burned at the Exe on May 30, 1933 . The main speaker was the Flensburg NS-Kampfbundführer F. Schröder. Literature was burned by Sigmund Freud , Erich Kästner , Heinrich Mann , Karl Marx , Erich Maria Remarque and Kurt Tucholsky . Were incinerated Socialist flags .

Market watch

In 1938 the market guard was built according to a design by the architect Theodor Rieve, presumably with the participation of the municipal building officer Paul Ziegler .

The exe today

When the area around the Exe was built on, a small city district emerged. Here the exe also appears in the name of individual shops, for example at a kiosk on the northern edge of the exe. Near the Exe there is also the exxe children's and youth club , a children 's and youth recreational facility , a hostel and the Norderburse dormitory . Two of the surrounding streets refer to the Exe with their names: The street Kleine Exe is shown on current city maps, but has no street sign; the street Zur Exe (Exegade) is part of the B 199 . In addition, the street Am Ochsenmarkt (Ved Oksetorvet) is reminiscent of the Ochsenmarkt. Two other street names in the area, Schützenkuhle (Skyttekulen) and Kanonenberg (Kanonbjerget) , refer to the St. Nikolai Rifle Guild of 1583 .

In December 2015, Flensburg's largest refugee shelter, which was designed for up to 400 residents, opened at the Exe in the course of the refugee crisis in Europe . Around 25 percent of the entire space was used to accommodate asylum seekers for a period of two years .

Despite living containers, there is a fair twice a year and a flea market on the Exe several times a year . From time to time large circuses also pitch their tents there, such as Circus Charles Knie , Circus Carl Busch or Circus Krone . The Exe has also been used as a concert area; In 2008 Herbert Grönemeyer sang there in front of 22,000 spectators . When there are no events, the exe is used as a parking lot . The city center of Flensburg can be reached on foot within ten minutes.
