The Town of Exeter is located in southern Wisconsin, around 35 north of the Illinois border . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois is located on the Mississippi and lies around 115 km to the west-southwest. The town is traversed in the east in a north-south direction by the Sugar River , which belongs to the Mississippi river basin via the Pecatonica River and the Rock River .

The Wisconsin State Highway 92 runs through the northeast of the Town of Exeter. In addition, the County Highways D, CC, W and X run through the town. All other roads are subordinate country roads and some unpaved roads.
In a north-south direction, a rail trail for hikers and cyclists runs through the entire town on the route of a former railway line with the Badger State Trail . In winter, the hiking trail can also be used with snowmobiles. Another rail trail runs through the southwest of the town, the Sugar River State Trail.
The nearest airport is Dane County Regional Airport in Wisconsin's capital Madison (around 50 km northeast).
