Degenau is a hamlet and a chapel in the municipality of Zihlschlacht-Sitterdorf in the Swiss canton of Thurgau . The settlement is located below Blidegg Castle at a ford of the Sitter .
history
Politically, Degenau belonged to the Blidegg rule until 1736 , to the Zihlschlacht court from 1736 to 1798 and to the local community of Sitterdorf from 1803 to 1996 . In 898 the farm in Tegerunouva was confirmed as the property of the St. Gallen Church of St. Mangen , from 1388 the St. Nicholas Chapel in Degenau was occupied as its branch . The wall paintings and graves discovered during the restoration from 1945 to 1947 point to a building from the 12th century and earlier church independence.
In the late Middle Ages , the residents of Bernhardzell were ecclesiastical. Around 1530 they converted to the Reformation and from then on belonged to the Reformed Sitterdorf. The chapel served the partly Catholic and partly Reformed lords of Blidegg Castle as a house chapel and was supplied by Bernhardzell and Sitterdorf. In 1833 Bernhardzell ceded the chapel fund to the Catholic parish in Sitterdorf. From the late 17th century until 1901 there was a paper mill in Degenau.
traffic
The hand-operated ferry across the Sitter connects Degenau with the Gertau farm in the neighboring community of Hauptwil-Gottshaus . Depending on the water level, the ferry offers space for up to 12 people.
