Since 1875 the Sydfyenske Dampskibsselskab (SFDS) has operated various routes between Danish ports, some of which had German ports as their destination. The Svendborg – Rudkøbing ferry connection was an important link .

history

The steamship Faaborg was sailing between the islands south of Funen from 1885 and reached Kiel . In 1886 the ship sailed the route Svendborg - Nakskov - Lübeck .

In the mid-1890s, SFDS had a monopoly on ferry operations between the islands of Funen and Langeland . The ships, including the Thorseng , sailed between the ports of Rudkøbing and Svendborg as early as 1885 . The Rut ran the same route between 1894 and 1911, but extended to Marstal . From 1898 the ferry service Rudkøbing - Lohals - Korsør was used with the Tranekjær .

Between Rudkøbing and Svendborg tried the Rudkøbing of the competitor Dampskibsselskabet Langeland by operating the routes Rudkøbing – Kædeby – Rudkøbing – Svendborg and Lohals – Dageløkke – Rudkøbing – Svendborg to break the monopoly of SFDS, but this did not succeed.

In 1911 the lines of the private railway company Langelandsbanen were opened on Langeland . When it was decided in the mid-1920s to build a large new ferry for the Svendborg – Rudkøbing connection, a train ferry was ordered. The reason was the high transport costs for goods from Langeland to Funen. With the possibility of driving the freight wagons directly on board the ferry, expensive reloading in the port of Rudkøbing was avoided.

The Svendborg – Rudkøbing ferry service was discontinued on September 29, 1962, along with the railway lines on the island, when Langelandsbroen was opened.

Langeland

The single-track steam train ferry Langeland was ordered from Helsingør Værft A / S and was delivered on May 15, 1926 with hull number 175. The Langeland was first used on May 22, 1926 . The ferry could carry 600 passengers as well as cars and coaches. The top speed of around twelve knots meant a fast and efficient connection between the islands. In one of the best years of operation, 1,800 freight wagons with sugar beet were transferred with the ferry.

In 1947 the ship was converted to run on oil.

The Langeland was sold to Italy in August 1961, where it was renamed Citta di Ischia . It sailed between Naples and Capri and until 1973 belonged to the shipping company Nicola Monti in Naples, then until 1988 to the shipping company Libera Navigazione Lauro, Naples and from 1988 to the shipping company Alilauro Aliscafi del Tirreno, Naples.

Lolland

The Langeland was replaced in 1958 by the motor ferry Lolland , which operated on this ferry route until it was discontinued in 1962.

The Lolland was built by Svendborg Skibsværft A / S in 1955 with construction number 70. Before being used on the Svendborg – Rudkøbing route, it drove on the Spodsbjerg – Nakskov and Korsør – Nyborg lines and, after the setting, between Korsør and Lohals and between Ærøskøbing and Svendborg.

From March 18, 1956 to June 20, 1956 and from March 16, 1957 to April 13, 1957, the ship was chartered to De Danske Statsbaner . They used it on the Korsør – Nyborg ferry route.

In 1979 the Lolland was sold, renamed Green Bay Transport I and used in Canada between Burnside and St. Bredans until 1990 . In 1990 the ship was launched at Marystown Shipyard Ltd., St. John's, Canada, and then used as a tonnage .
