Under the name Teuto-Express , a museum railroad with historic steam locomotives has been running in Tecklenburger and Osnabrücker Land on the Ibbenbüren – Hövelhof railway line and other branch lines in the Teutoburg Forest and Münsterland area since 1977 . The railway vehicles, which mainly originate from the 1920s, are stationed in the depot of the Teutoburger Wald-Eisenbahn (TWE) in Lengerich (Westphalia) and are operated legally and economically independently of the TWE by the non-profit Förderverein Eisenbahn-Tradition (ETL).

history

Special train trips for school and company outings with up to 1,000 people already took place on the Ibbenbüren – Hövelhof railway in the 1950s. The Teutoburger Wald-Eisenbahn (TWE) also transported entire company workforces from the ribbon weaving mill Güth & Wolf, the silk weaving mill Bartels and the publishing house Bertelsmann from Gütersloh as well as the agricultural machinery factory Claas from Harsewinkel to go hiking to Bad Iburg , to a restaurant in Lienen- Höste and to the open-air theater Tecklenburg .

Even before regular passenger train operations were discontinued, special trains with historic vehicles ran occasionally on the Teutoburg Forest Railway for railway enthusiasts. Soon after the shutdown of passenger traffic between Ibbenbüren and Versmold in 1968, the Tecklenburger Land tourism association commissioned the TWE with charter trips for tour groups on weekend excursions on the northern section, initially using the Esslingen railcars that were still operational for general cargo traffic .

With the steam locomotive ban imposed in 1977 on the entire network of the then German Federal Railroad (DB) , many railway associations found new uses for their steam locomotives on the private railway lines not owned by the federal government . In the same year, a new museum train stop was built at the Ibbenbüren Aasee lake, which was created for local recreation, for the excursion traffic introduced at the same time by the Tecklenburger Land Tourist Association under the name Teuto-Express . In the following period, historical special trains with the steam locomotives 01 150 , 24 009, 24 083 , 38 1772 , 44 404 were used on the scenic sections of the Teutoburg Forest Railway , which developed into a popular figure for the TWE and a national reputation of the Private railway line Ibbenbüren – Hövelhof led.

The historic TWE railcar VT 03 (built in 1926) is now owned by the Lengerich railway tradition.

For the special train service , the TWE initially kept its last four beige-red painted platform wagons from 1925, but these were gradually supplemented and replaced by the participating railway associations with their own historical passenger wagons of various standard designs. In addition, Germany's oldest operational internal combustion engine has been available since 1981 with the TWE towing vehicle VT 03, built in 1926 .

Railway tradition (Lengerich / Westf.)

Today the Teuto-Express is operated on a voluntary basis by the Lengerich-based Verein Eisenbahn-Tradition (ETL) and presents with its tender locomotive 50 3655 , tank locomotive 78 468 , diesel locomotive V 36 412 and 14 authentically in the operating condition between 1949 and 1956 as a passenger car "Rolling museum" the wide variety of types of the railway era III a .

In the summer season, the Teuto-Express commutes on a few Sundays in the northern TWE section on its main route between Ibbenbüren Aasee and Bad Laer. The main target group are families with children. Popular excursion destinations include the summer toboggan run and fairytale forest as well as the climbing forest in Ibbenbüren , the Dörenther cliffs near Brochterbeck , castle ruins with an open-air stage , old town and the valley floodplain with the moated castle Haus Marck in Tecklenburg , the barefoot park in Lienen , the treetop path and the castle in Bad Iburg as well the adventure park in Bad Laer . Strollers and bicycles are transported free of charge in the luggage cart.

Other annually recurring appointments are the special trips to Christmas markets such as on the first Sunday in Advent after Nikolaus on the southern part of the route to Gütersloh and Hövelhof, at the beginning of January via the Westphalian State Railway to Warstein, on Ascension Day on the Haller Willem between Bielefeld and Halle / Westphalia Whitsun Mondays on the Tecklenburger Nordbahn between Recke and Osnabrück and at the beginning of September from Gütersloh to the fair in Ibbenbüren. In addition, both culinary trips to destinations such as kale or asparagus or distillery or brewery tours, as well as full-day trips to various destinations outside the TWE network are offered.

Several line closures at Tecklenburg-Brochterbeck and Bad Iburg have been affecting the voluntary museum railroad traffic since autumn 2010, so that the Teuto-Express could almost only be used outside of its former main line for several years.

On the occasion of the State Horticultural Show Bad Iburg 2018 , LWS Lappwaldbahn Service GmbH, as the new owner of the northern Teutoburg Forest Railway, restored the superstructure between Lengerich and Bad Iburg to a passable condition and replaced a dilapidated bridge with a new one. During the state horticultural show, the railway tradition and the Osnabrück steam locomotive enthusiasts provided feeder traffic to Bad Iburg on a total of ten operating days on the rail route from Lengerich, Osnabrück and Münster.

For the 2020 season, historical special train journeys on several sections of the Teutoburg Forest Railway have been announced on eight dates:

Osning-Bahn (Halle / Westf.)

The Glockensee in the spa gardens of Bad Laer has been used as a destination for special train trips from Bielefeld and Gütersloh since 2014 by the three-part MAN rail bus operated by the Osning Railway.

With the two or three-part MAN rail bus stationed in Bielefeld (motor car 302 027, intermediate car 302 142 and control car 302 051), the Halle (Westphalia) -based Eisenbahnverein Osning-Bahn (OBEV) used the two southern TWE trains from 2011 to 2017 . Route sections Gütersloh - Harsewinkel - Versmold - Bad Laer or Gütersloh - Verl - Hövelhof for leisure and tourism traffic.

Action alliance pro TWE (Bad Laer)

In January 2012, the action alliance pro TWE was founded in Bad Laer , which “aims to maintain and regularly use the Teutoburg Forest Railway in the areas of leisure, tourism and freight transport”. The interest group is a non-partisan association of private individuals with diverse expertise in the railway sector. It is in contact with decision-makers in politics, public administration and business as well as with the operators of museum and tourist railways as well as railway companies and talks about how the revitalization of the northern sections of the route can best succeed.

According to a study on an excursion train between Bad Laer and Gütersloh presented to the local authorities for tourism, city marketing and business development in autumn 2013, the southern section, which is still passable, also has great potential for successful tourist train traffic. From 2014 to 2017, the organizers Eisenbahn-Tradition and Osning-Bahn then carried out tourist special train services between Gütersloh and Harsewinkel and Versmold and Bad Laer on up to ten days of travel per season.

The action alliance is now recognized as a serious dialogue partner due to its investigation into the condition of the line, proposals for its repair and the concepts for “rail-based passenger transport for leisure and tourism”. With a view to hosting the Bad Iburg State Horticultural Show in 2018, the alliance advocated a direct connection with Osnabrück without changing trains.
