FEI Nations Cup 2016 (dressage riding)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2016 in dressage (2016 FEI Nations Cup ™ Dressage) was the fourth season of the Nations Cup for dressage riders .

Course of the tournament series

As in the previous year, the Nations Cup series comprised six stages. Only three tournaments that were part of the Nations Cup 2015 were also included in the 2016 season calendar: Wellington, Rotterdam and Falsterbo. In France, Compiègne was selected as the new venue, in Germany the Nations Cup returned to Aachen after a one-year break. The British tournament Dressage at Hickstead has been canceled, a Danish stage is brand new in the program.

The tournaments were again advertised as CDIO 3 * or CDIO 5 *. The Nations Cup organizers could choose between three different modes for the Nations Cup:

  • The result of the Grand Prix de Dressage (three or four riders per team) is compared with the results of the Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) and Grand Prix Freestyle (one or two riders per team, only one freestyle result per team counts for the overall ranking ) added,
  • The Olympic team competition mode: Grand Prix de Dressage and Grand Prix Spécial count towards the Nations Cup (only permitted for CDIO 5 *) or
  • Different tender (only outside Europe, approval by the FEI required)

The tournaments were held from March 29th to July 17th, 2016. Points were awarded on the basis of placement; more evaluation points were awarded in CDIO 5 * tournaments than in 3 * tournaments.

The exams

1st test: United States

The 2016 season kicked off with the only non-European stage of the Nations Cup: the venue for the American Nations Cup tournament was Wellington in Florida. The tournament was held as the 12th week of the local dressage tournament series Global Dressage Festival from March 29 to April 3, 2016 and was advertised as CDIO 3 *.

The Wellington used a special set of rules for the Nations Cup that should allow more nations to participate: The team members did not only compete at Grand Prix level to determine the winner of the Nations Cup. Instead, the riders could either compete in the Grand Prix de Dressage and in the Grand Prix Spécial or in the Prix St. Georges and in the Intermediaire I. In order to take into account the difference in difficulty, the results of the Grand Prix Tour were increased by a factor of 1.5 percent per rider.

In contrast to previous years, most teams competed uniformly in one tour, so either all riders rode in the Grand Prix tests (teams from Australia, Canada and the United States) or competed in the small tour (Spain, Denmark and Costa Rica). The German association was criticized for withdrawing its team a few weeks before the Nations Cup. A team with four riders had been planned in the small tour, but according to press reports, due to "certain standards", this was not done.

2nd test: Denmark

The Nations Cup was continued in mid-May, and the first week of the Odense Horse Festival took place in Odense from 13 to 16 May 2016 (one week later the show jumping Nations Cup was held here). In this CDIO 3 *, all Nations Cup riders had to compete in the Grand Prix; the second special test was either the Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) or the Grand Prix Freestyle.

While Sweden was still in the lead after the Grand Prix de Dressage, Denmark with better results in the second partial tests narrowly secured the overall victory. The German team followed a long way behind in third place.

3rd test: France

The third station of the Nations Cup took place just one weekend after Odense. After three years in Vidauban, the French Nations Cup tournament took place in Compiègne . The CDIO 5 * tournament was held from May 19-22, 2016.

The event was hit by heavy rainfall. While the Grand Prix could still be held, the conditions on the Sunday of the tournament were too bad for the Nations Cup to be held again. The Grand Prix Spécial was canceled entirely, in the Grand Prix Freestyle only three riders started. Therefore, only the Grand Prix counted for the Nations Cup. The United States team dominated here.

3rd test: Netherlands

The Dutch Dressage Nations Cup took place as part of the CHIO Rotterdam . The tournament took place from June 23 to 26, 2016, the dressage tests were advertised as CDIO 5 *.

The Nations Cup variant was also selected in Rotterdam, in which the final classification consists of the results of the Grand Prix (all riders), Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) and Grand Prix Freestyle (other team riders). A special feature in Rotterdam was that only the riders of the best five teams from the Grand Prix were allowed to compete in the second partial tests. The riders of the sixth and seventh placed teams, however, were only allowed to compete in one consolation test that did not count towards the Nations Cup.

The Rotterdam Nations Cup was very strong: no team remained below 70 percent on average for their riders in the Grand Prix. The Netherlands, the United States, Sweden and France started with their strongest pairs. With an average of over 75 percent both in the Grand Prix and in the second partial tests (overall result after deducting the deleted results: 460.167), the hosts' team won.

For the second partial tests, the regulations stipulated that both results from the Grand Prix Spécial as well as the best result from the Grand Prix Freestyle are included in the evaluation, i.e. the poorer freestyle result is always the deleted result. The third-placed Swedes were particularly affected by this: Their second-best freestyle result of 78.675 percent was deleted, instead the weaker result from the Spécial (67.412%, thus over 10 percent difference) was also included in the final result. Due to the high results of the riders of the United States, the Swedes would not have made it to second place even with other regulations.

4th test: Sweden

For the second year in a row, the Falsterbo Horse Show hosted the Swedish Nations Cup. The tournament, whose dressage tests were advertised as CDIO 5 *, was held from July 7th to 10th, 2016. The mode of Grand Prix and two second special stages is also used in Falsterbo (two team riders start in the Grand Prix Spécial, one in the Grand Prix Freestyle). In contrast to the previous stages, only three riders per team are allowed to start in Falsterbo.

5th exam: Germany

Since the British Nations Cup tournament in Hickstead was canceled, the German Nations Cup tournament in mid-July was the last Nations Cup stage of the season.

The dressage tests of the CDIO 5 * as part of the CHIO Aachen were held from July 14th to 17th, 2016 in Aachen . In contrast to the other European stages, the Olympic Nations Cup format was selected in Aachen, in which the team result is made up of the results of the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Spécial.

Since the CHIO took place at the same time as the Dutch championships and one week after the CDI 3 * Hartpury (which served as the last test of the British riders before the Olympic Games), the toughest opponents of the German team were not at all or only with a "second team" Begin. In the first part of the test, the Grand Prix, all German team riders had problems changing between two. Despite these mistakes, the couples convinced, none came under 75 percent (three German riders over 80 percent), so that Germany was already clearly in the lead with almost 28 percentage points.

For the second partial test, the Grand Prix Spécial, the six best teams from the Grand Prix as well as all other riders who achieved a result of over 70 percent in the first partial test (whose result counted for their teams) qualified. In the Grand Prix Spécial, the leading Germans as well as the second-placed US Americans confirmed their achievements and finished the Nations Cup with team results that were almost identical to the Grand Prix.
