Fabio Maj (born June 16, 1970 in Schilpario ) is a former Italian cross-country skier .

Career

Maj made his debut in Silver Star in the cross-country skiing world cup in December 1991 and finished 57th over 10 km classic. In the 1992/93 season he won the Cross-Country Continental Cup in Argentière and Rogla . He got his first World Cup points in December 1992 in the Fiemme Valley with the 26th place in the 30 km freestyle. In the 1993/94 season he reached his first top ten placement in the World Cup with tenth place over 15 km freestyle in Oslo . In the 1994/95 season he came into the points six times and thus achieved 26th place in the overall World Cup at the end of the season. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1995 in Thunder Bay , he won the bronze medal with the relay. In the following season he mostly achieved midfield placements in the World Cup and at the end of the season he reached 29th place in the overall World Cup. In December 1995 he won his third Continental Cup in Campra . In the 1996/97 season he came in the top ten twice in the World Cup and finished 23rd in the overall World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1997 in Trondheim , he achieved 17th place over 50 km classic. After six placings in a row and a victory at the Continental Cup in Campra at the beginning of the 1997/98 season, he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup with third place over 30 km freestyle in Kavgolovo . In Ramsau am Dachstein he won the relay. This was followed by four more top ten results and at the end of the season 11th place in the overall World Cup and seventh place in the long distance World Cup. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , he won the silver medal with the relay. In addition, he finished 28th over 10 km classic and 13th place in the subsequent pursuit. In the 1998/99 season he came five times in the top ten in the World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein, he won the bronze medal with the relay, just like four years earlier. His best individual result was tenth place in the pursuit race. At the last World Cup of the season in Oslo he was third with the relay and took 18th place in the overall World Cup. After a weak start to the 1999/2000 season with two placements outside the points, he won his first individual World Cup victory in the sprint in Engelberg . This was followed by five top ten results, including second place in the 30 km mass start race in Lahti and thus achieved ninth place in the sprint world cup, seventh place in the long distance world cup and sixth place in the overall world cup at the end of the season. In the following season he reached 13 individual placements in the points, including three results in the top ten. In December 2000 he won the team sprint in Clusone together with Fulvio Valbusa . At the highlight of the season, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti, he finished 15th in the skiathlon , seventh over 30 km classic and sixth place in the relay. He finished the season in 14th place in the overall World Cup. After he finished in midfield at the beginning of the 2001/02 season, he reached his first top ten placement in early January 2002 with eighth place in the Skiathlon in Fiemme Valley. At the following World Cup in Nové Město , he won over 10 km freestyle and in the team sprint together with Freddy Schwienbacher . At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he won the silver medal with the relay. He also came in 20th place in the skiathlon, 14th place over 50 km classic and 13th place in the 30 km mass start race. At the end of the season he finished 23rd in the overall World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Fiemme Valley, he took 23rd place over 15 km classic, 15th place in the 30 km mass start race and tenth place with the relay. In his last active season 2003/04 he started in the Marathon Cup . His best result was 15th place at the König-Ludwig-Lauf .
