history

As part of Army Structure IV , the 263 Parachute Battalion was set up on April 1, 1982 as the third battalion of Airborne Brigade 26 . On November 30, 1994, it celebrated its move to the Zweibrücken location with a big tattoo . Today the garrison town is the military home of around 1,000 paratroopers . From November 1985 to July 1998 the paratrooper battalion 263 was part of the multinational AMF (L) Brigade, since April 1, 1997 it has been part of the Einsatzverband evacuation operations. It has represented the German paratroopers in numerous international exercises in Denmark , Belgium and the USA . In 1993 , a large part of the battalion was used for security tasks as part of the UN mission in Somalia . From June to October 1999 the battalion was under the leadership of the 4th Company with around 150 soldiers in KFOR deployment. From July 2002 to February 2003 , the battalion provided the lead association for security forces in Afghanistan. In July 2003, the battalion made a part of the infantry parts of the fourth mission contingent Kabul Multinational Brigade (KMNB) as part of the International Security Assistance Force ( ISAF = International Security Assistance Force ) in Afghanistan . From June to December 2006 a large part of the Btl was in Africa as part of the EUFOR RD Congo mission to secure the democratic elections in the Republic of the Congo. This mission also went almost smoothly and all soldiers had returned to their families in good health by Christmas 2006.

The later FDP politician Jürgen W. Möllemann was a candidate for the reserve officer in the paratrooper battalion 263.

As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr, the paratrooper battalion 263 was disbanded on March 31, 2015. Parts of the FschJgBtl 263 were transferred to the new 26th Paratrooper Regiment . The Zweibrücken location will be retained.

Press

  • In June 2006, the 263 Parachute Battalion hit the headlines negatively because of highly controversial rituals. According to a report by the Saarbrücker Zeitung, dried fruit was introduced into the rectum of a soldier as an admission ritual for the NCOs and then hit on the buttocks with a paddle. Some soldiers were then transferred and the Congo mission was taken over by other forces in the battalion due to the incidents.
  • On July 10, 2006, a recruit was brought unconscious to the Homburg University Hospital after running 5000 meters . During his stay in the hospital, despite the efforts of the doctors, his kidneys and liver failed, and a day later his lungs failed. When the heart finally stopped, the recruit died.
