The Fanellhorn is a mountain in the Adula Alps in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland with a height of 3123  m above sea level. M. The summit southwest of Vals is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area and a popular ski tour destination in winter. The shapely, three-sided pyramid represents the center of the small Fanellhorn group.

Location and surroundings

The Fanellhorn is located entirely in the municipality of Vals . To the north-west are the Guraletschhorn ( 2907  m ) and the Ampervreilhorn ( 2801  m ). With these two, the Fanellhorn forms a mountain ridge that separates the Valser Tal from the Peilertal. In the west, the Fanellhorn is bordered by the Canaltal, in the south by the Fanell Glacier . To the west of the Fanellhorn is the Zervreilasee .

Its neighboring peaks include the Wissgrätli ( 2865  m ), the Guraletschhorn ( 2907  m ), the Ampervreilhorn ( 2801  m ), the Valserhorn ( 2885  m ), the Wenglispitz ( 2841  m ), the Chilchalphorn ( 3039  m ), the Lorenzhorn ( 3048  m ), the Zervreilahorn ( 2897  m ) or the Furggeltihorn ( 3043  m ).

The farthest visible point ( 44 ° 16 '39.1 "  N , 10 ° 24' 37.7"  O ) from Fanellhorn lies with the Monte Cusna ( 2121  m slm ) in the municipality of Villa Minozzo between Bologna and La Spezia in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna and is 272 km away.

Origin of name

Fan is the basis of the Italian fango for 'mud'. In Rhaeto-Romanic the word existed as faun, feun for 'puddle' and was preserved in 'fan' and many other names. Fanella Alp and Fanellahorn were probably supplemented with -ella like Lavinella ( Santa Domenica ) - lavina is a derivation from the Italian for 'avalanche'.
