The Faule See is located in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state capital Schwerin in the "Schweriner Seenlandschaft" conservation area . The size of the dammed lake, which is assessed as weakly polytrophic , is 50 hectares and the shore length is 4052 meters.
The Faule See is located southwest of the Schweriner See. The banks are partly wooded and part of a public park. Near-natural riparian strips are partially part of legally protected biotopes . The Schwerin Palace Park is located on the northwest bank. In the southeast the body of water borders the Schwerin Zoo .
Meaning of the name
The name of the lake was originally "Fuhler See". It probably comes from the word "Fula [n]", which means "to fill" (foal, young horse). Accordingly, the name “lake on the banks of which foals are kept” can be translated. This interpretation seems logical, since various field names in this area indicate horse breeding.
use
The water of the Faulen See drives the waterwheel of the Schwerin grinding mill , which has been preserved as a technical monument to this day , which was initially built as a tinder mill in 1705 and later converted. The museum clearly shows stone grinding with the reconstructed technique of the 18th century. The lake also feeds the water systems in the Schwerin Palace Park.
The lake is primarily used by a fishing club, fishing and water sports clubs, and dragon boat races take place every year . In addition, the “Five Lakes Run” passes here and the Schwerin rowing regatta is organized by the neighboring rowing club almost every year.
Flora and fauna
In the area of the lake there are 32 breeding bird species, including coot , great crested grebe , nightingale , mallard , pond rail and reed warbler , three types of amphibians (common frog , moor frog , water frog ), grass snake and six types of dragonfly . Otters have been detected in several places.
