Reviews

Film critics attribute social topicality to the film because of its topic and locate it as a contribution to the #MeToo debate. Denise Bucher writes in the NZZ am Sonntag : “It is to be hoped that those who are annoyed about the alleged whining about equality, MeToo and gender issues, thanks to films like #Female Pleasure, can better understand why there is no other way than that one defends oneself against this culture of oppression. (...) In #Female Pleasure, director Barbara Miller shows how discrimination, misogyny and sexualized violence all over the world are connected to patriarchal structures, legitimized by holy scriptures, whether those of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists or Hindus. "

Dieter Oßwald adds in the cinema magazine Programmkino: “Beyond Hollywood, the global oppression of women by religions is of course more serious. (...) In the structural two-class society of men and women, the fundamentalists of Islam, Judaism or the Catholic Church are terrifyingly similar. The stories of the five protagonists sound shocking - and encouraging at the same time: because these heroines do not want their right to self-determination to be taken away without a fight. One of the very important documentaries in this cinema year, which should meet with great audience interest - as was already seen at the Locarno Festival. "

In her report on SRF Online, Annette Scharnberg emphasizes the universality of the topic: «On her travels - no matter where in the world - the director Barbara Miller encountered the same problem: the taboo on female sexuality and the negation of the female body. (...) #Female Pleasure is an important film - for the self-image of women and the mutual understanding of the sexes. Barbara Miller manages to work out clearly with the five examples she has chosen: Every woman in this film has something to do with the other and ultimately with all of us. Every woman in this film fights for her rights and therefore for the rights of all of us. "

The ZDF editor Nadia Nasser sees the documentary as a strong plea against encrusted gender roles and as one of the most important documentaries of 2018. It's not just about female lust or sexuality, but actually about human rights. The film stimulates thought and gives an insight into a world full of violence, shame and taboos - the world of experience many women experience when it comes to their bodies.
