Life

Ferdinand Gorton was born as the second son of the Austrian politician and landowner Wilhelm Gorton on December 5, 1952 in Klagenfurt . He graduated from elementary school in Strasbourg in Carinthia and then attended grammar school in Klagenfurt and Vienna . After finishing school, he studied at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna (BOKU) and graduated with a Dipl.-Ing . The topic of his subsequent doctoral thesis at BOKU dealt with the more efficient construction of forest roads . After completing his studies, he worked as a specialist in this field at the University of Vienna for several years .

He then returned to Carinthia , where he worked in his father's business. Since 1999, when he was elected by the State Hunters Association to succeed Dieter Senitza, he has officiated as State Hunting Master of Carinthia.

Activities as state hunter master

As the state hunter master, Gorton was present in national and international media primarily for his commitment to preserving the social image of the hunt . He faced the criticism of well-known animal welfare organizations and always saw himself as a mediator between the two interest groups. Under his leadership, the peace agreement, which is important in terms of both animal protection law and hunting history, was concluded for the first time in 2002 between the hunting and animal protection associations such as the hunters' association, the Austrian Federal Forests and the WWF . This was the first alliance of its kind in the traditional conflict over the use of natural spaces. Furthermore, he supported the project of the resettlement of the bearded vulture in the Alps , a now well-known tourist attraction and advocated a better explanation of such resettlement projects in order to attract even simple hunters to such projects. In the following year, Gorton and Regional Councilor Josef Martinz initiated a winter protection campaign for game and forest , based on Vorarlberg's model , in order to dissuade skiers , ski tourers and other winter sports enthusiasts from leaving the marked slopes and paths and to explain to them the associated disturbance of the forest habitat. The state of Carinthia supported this project with a grant of 50,000 euros and more than 2000 people were involved.

Especially in the wake of media reports about the illegal slain brown bears Roznik, was discussed in the part of the animal welfare organizations back on banning the hunting, Gorton fell through its intermediary role and providing a high Ergreiferprämie the hunting community for the poachers on. With him, an official representative of the hunters spoke out for the first time at a district hunters' day against the shooting of brown bears in Austria. Gorton called for drastic consequences for such offenses and for the first time called a bear summit to find the cause of the bear migration from Slovenia to Austria , which was particularly recognized by animal rights activists in northern Italy .

Critics of the hunt, Gorton opposed the economic aspect, according to which more than 15 billion euros are turned over annually in the entire European economic area through hunting and the sub-areas connected with it.

As state hunter master, Gorton was responsible for the finances of the Carinthian hunters' association. When in 2009 the conversion from a community of interest to a corporation under public law, which he supported, did not bring in the originally planned cost reduction of 365,000 euros, but caused additional costs of 700,000 euros, Gorton came under criticism from the audit office . Gorton said he was at the cost, but agreed to look at any suggestions for improvement.

After more than twenty years as state hunter master, Gorton retired at the age of 67. Walter Brunner was elected as his successor. For his many years of service to the Carinthian hunting community, he was appointed honorary state hunter master.
