Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Olivier , called the Younger (born April 1, 1785 in Dessau , † February 11, 1841 in Munich ) was a German painter and graphic artist . Artistically he was close to the Nazarenes .

Life

Olivier was the son of the pedagogue Prof. Ferdinand Olivier the Elder. Ä. and his wife, the opera singer Louise Niedhart . Like his brothers Friedrich Olivier and Heinrich Olivier , Ferdinand Olivier also enjoyed his first artistic lessons from 1801 to 1802 from Karl Wilhelm Kolbe and Johann Christian Haldenwang (1777–1831).

From 1802 to 1803 Olivier learned woodcut techniques from Johann Friedrich Unger in Berlin . It was during this time that Olivier's decision to become an artist was made. From summer 1804 to summer 1806 Olivier went to Dresden with his brother Heinrich , where they mostly copied landscape paintings by Claude Lorrain and Jacob Izaaksoon van Ruisdael .

In addition, Olivier became a student of Jakob Wilhelm Mechau and Karl Ludwig Kaaz . Through contacts from Friedrich August von Klinkowström , he made the acquaintance of Philipp Otto Runge and Caspar David Friedrich .

During the war Olivier was held in Dessau in 1807 . During this time he got to know the politician August von Rode , who hired him as the embassy secretary in the Prussian representation in Paris . In the same year Olivier took up his duties. A few months later his brother Heinrich also came. Olivier soon quit in order to have time for art again. However, through the mediation of Rodes, Olivier received three orders from Duke Leopold III. von Anhalt-Dessau , which enabled him to extend his stay in Paris until 1810.

In the summer of 1810 Olivier went on a trip to the Harz Mountains with his brother Friedrich . The pictures created on this trip already show the influence of Caspar David Friedrich .

In 1811 Olivier traveled to Vienna via Dresden . There he met Joseph Anton Koch . The following year he married Margret Heller, a widow with three children. In Vienna Olivier experienced his religious awakening, which resulted in a deepening of his Protestantism .

His studio became the focus of Protestant artists in Vienna, and there were always friendly exchanges with the Catholic Nazarenes or the circle around August Wilhelm Schlegel . In 1816 Olivier was admitted to the Lukasbund . At that time, his brother Heinrich Olivier and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld still lived in Olivier's family .

After the end of the wars of liberation Olivier traveled through Salzburg with Philipp Veit , and they discovered this region for German landscape painting . On a second trip to this landscape he was accompanied by his brother Friedrich Olivier as well as Carl Ludwig Frommel , Johann Christian Rist and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld .

In 1830 Olivier moved to Munich and, on the intercession of Peter von Cornelius , succeeded Ludwig von Schorn (1793–1842) as Secretary General of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts . In 1833 Olivier was appointed professor of art history .

Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Olivier died on February 11, 1841 in Munich at the age of 56.

Although Olivier never stayed in Rome , he is still considered one of the most important representatives of the Nazarenes . In his late work he also idealized subjects by Gaspard Dughet and Nicolas Poussin .
